The Duke's Pass or The Dukes Pass
which duke or dukes please?
Asked by Margaret Brown on 09 December 2008
The title of the Pass leading north from Aberfoyle and into the Trossachs should be singular and with an apostrophe to be strictly accurate! The Duke’s Pass or the Duke’s Road refers to the then landowner, the Duke of Montrose, and his efforts to improve access after the publication of Sir Walter Scott’s poem, The Lady of the Lake, in 1810, brought tourists flocking to the area. Montrose built the road, which had been only a rough track, so that it would take carriages. Over the years further improvements took place but the road you drive today dates only from 1932. Here are a couple of winter views taken from the highest point of the road, before it drops to the Loch Katrine road junction.
