Ellisland Farm, Dumfriesshire
“Yet another lovely visit to Elliasland Farm where Robert Burns lived, worked and wrote. Sitting between the river Nith and the A76, north of Dumfries town at the bottom right of Burns Corridor. Run by volunteers who do an unbelievable job. ”

The Village Green, Lochinver, Sutherland
“Amazingly friendly place to go for a coffee and a pancake, or lovely homemade cakes. The owner is always friendly and welcomed my two young children too. Well worth a visit.”

Laggan Drey
“The Drey is simply stunning. Its an unusual award-winning house built on stilts with dramatic views towards the peaks of Ben Alder and Craig Meagaidh. Great facilities, including a fantastic ensuite wetroom, woodburning stove and underfloor heating, make this a comfortable place to relax. ideal for Aviemore and the cairngorms national park. Really friendly and helpful owners too. ”

Moray Cottages
“We had a wonderful week there in the cottage which is a converted barn. Our Hosts David & Fiona could not have been more melcoming, with a bottle of chilled wine in the fridge, a home made cake and even treats for our dog on arrival. Throughout the week they were very helpful with good knowledge of the area and good places to visit. We have already booked to return in early April next year as it is so good. 10/10.”

Mountview - Saorsa Log Cabin in Lochinver, Sutherland“Chalet accommodation provided by Susa & Roy Macleod of Baddidaroch, Lochinver is easily the best we have come across. Clean, comfortable and great attention to detail often missing elsewhere. Add to this spectacular setting and you have the perfect holiday venue, reasonably priced too.”

Rothiemurchus Shooting Ground
“I have shot at quite a few clay pigeon shooting grounds over the years usually with an instructor. This year I shot with Mr Munro and Mr Gray from Rothiemurchus. I have to say that the instruction, facilities and general warm attitudes of both are at a level way above the norm. They are truly outstanding and clearly very knowledgable. I cant wait to go back.”

Loch Shiel Loch Cruise
“Loch Shiel boat cruises - went in late march, very few tourists, no midges, a great guide, really friendly, knowledgeable, showed us where to spot divers and eagles, as well as the spectacular Loch Shiel Highland landscape. ”

The Village Green, Lochinver
“Top marks to this tiny establishment in Lochinver which remains open throughout January - a real life-saver for cold and hungry travellers. With every other eatery closed for miles around, it's a very welcome oasis. ”

The Fruit Shop, Comrie
“Always a friendly wee shop, but letting you taste the clementines before you buy is definitely going the extra mile. You don't get that service from those dreadful supermarkets. Once again a reminder that Comrie in Perthshire has some super little retail businesses that deserve support.”

Secret Scotland
Secret Scotland“Secret Scotland planned a 9 day custom itinerary for me--and it has been the best thing I've done in my traveling life. I feel like I've had a friend in Scotland tell me what I should do and how to do it. Mike and Aurelia have been prompt with their correspondence, thorough with their information and a joy to work with. If I ever get to make another trip to Scotland--the first thing I would do is contact Secret Scotland!”

Cairngorm Hotel, Aviemore
“After a not-terribly-friendly experience at a large establishment not too far away, we stayed overnight at this hotel and it was very re-assuring to find the staff here refreshingly friendly and sincere, especially the reception staff. The food was excellent and featured many Scottish favourites - a genuine piece of Scotland to be cherished..... ”

Mains of Taymouth
“WOW!! What a place. I recently stayed there with my husband and had the most amazing time. There is so much to do and see, we both went on a horse ride at Mains of Taymouth Stables then had a game of golf on thier lovely Kenmore Golf Course. In the evening we ate in The Courtyard and on one night we had our dinner delivered by them! I spent a lot of time in The Courtyard Shop, nearly done all my Christmas shopping. All the staff were very firndly and went out their way to make us feel so welcome, nothing was too much trouble. Great memories, will be back!”

Rothiemurchus, Aviemore,
“My fiancee and I decided to try clay pigeon shooting for the first time and we found ourselves at Rothiemurchus. We had a fantastic experience during the time we were there. We not only had expert tution from John, our instructor, but had a great time too. Thr facilities are also second to none. In terms of knowledge and how to try and train us John was fantastic. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to try clay pigeon shooting.”

Secret Scotland
“We purchased a self-drive tour guide (with accommodation recommendations) from "Secret Scotland" and were extremely happy with their product. Their directions were clear and accurate. The recommendations they made for sights to see were very helpful and so complete we were confident we could choose based on their narrative and not miss anything important to us. The accommodations they recommended were all wonderful and exactly as they stated in their guide. They have standard tours and will also personalize a tour for you if you have somewhere in particular you want to go. I highly recommend their service.”

Culdearn House Hotel, Grantown-on-Spey
“I had a wonderful 4 night stay at this hotel. What a find! Nothing was too much trouble for the proprietors William and Sonia Marshall. As soon as they knew I was a vegetarian they went to great lengths to prepare wonderful meals for me. It was so nice to find somewhere that could really produce superb vegetarian meals - not a vegetable lasagna in sight. Sonia's oven baked mushroom risotto with parmesan on the 2nd night of my stay was simply to die for. Their wine list is exemplary, their rooms comfortable and tastefully decorated and furnished.”

Roeberry House B&B South Ronaldsay, Orkney
“Roeberry House is a cut above the usual bed and breakfast. They have a kitchen that you can use for cooking your own meals and Dagmar, the owner is an outstanding hostess. The house is at your disposal during the day even when you have checked out so if your plane or ferry is later on you have somewhere to relax. Highly recommended.”

Secret Scotland
“A couple of years back my wife and I visited Scotland on our great, once in a lifetime, around the world, retirement indulgence. But our visit was pretty ordinary and we were disapointed in the Scottish leg due to my inability to plan it well. Because we both love Scotland, we recently decided to go back and do it right. As you can imagine, visiting Scotland is a big deal when you live down under, so we got in touch with all sorts of businesses who sent brochures and bundles of information. We saved dozens of websites to a "Scotland or bust" folder of favourites on our computer and generally, we just got in a lather, where it all started to look just like our 1st trip. We could see another disaster looming. Then we found "Secret Scotland". What a relief. The owners, Mike and Aurelia, asked us what we would like to do, where we'd like to go, what we'd like to see etc, and modified one of their self drive tours for us. We chose the "Borders to Orkney 14 day tour" and within a few days it was emailed to us with the modifications in place. The "Secret Scotland" tours include sights that are off the beaten track by mainstream tour operators and excludes some of the more touristy sights should they be poor value for money or have an alternative way of seeing them. You get a lot of tour, in our case over 100 pages, for your money and because it was such good value we decided to buy a Recommended Accomodation list for this route, from them as well. The B&B's, hotels etc, on this list have all been checked out personally by Mike and Aurie and havent paid to be included, which makes us feel better, after a couple of not so great incidents on our last trip. So, all we can say is "well done" to Mike and Aurelia. They certainly did go the extra mile for us and we cant wait for the slowly approaching departure date to get here because we are now confident that this trip will be just brilliant thanks to "Secret Scotland".”

Soul Cafe Bar
“I visited Soul for lunch yesterday with a pre-booked group of 20+ Norwegians. As their Blue Badge tourist guide, I had also been asked to give the group a whisky nosing and tasting. Everything - and I mean every last detail - was superb. From the support I got from staff when delivering my (heavy) supplies, while pouring the samples and when clearing up the whisky tasting, to the absoutely superb food, I felt I was being "extra-miled" at every turn. And - most importantly - my group was also delighted with everything, and really, really enjoyed the drinks, service and excellent food. ”

Rothiemurchus Estate
“We were kindly accommodated, very late in the day in the Loch an Eilein campsite when we arrived in Aviemore, unannounced, earlier this month. We were met with a friendly welcome and given very helpful advice enabling us to plan an unscheduled day-hike into the Cairngorms. The facilities were spotless and perfectly maintained. We will be returning as soon as we can.”

Hectors Bothy, Kyle of Lochalsh
“We had to stop in Kyle on the way to catch the ferry to Harris from Uig. We came across this place in the car park and were so impressed by the friendliness of the staff and the speed of service. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her soup and loaded baked potato and my fish and chips were great (the fillet was huge)! The prices were fair and we would certainly recommend to anyone passing through Kyle or who is in the area.”

Elma McMenemy
“My family and I were recently in the area - staying at Castle Fraser - somehow I was lucky enough to find Elma McMenemy to guide us during our visit. We were seeing the beautiful countryside but mostly doing ancestral research into our Scottish past. Elma went above and beyond - at one special moment we were removing moss by hand from the grave stone of my great great great great relative in a local kirk-yard. The info and places she uncovered were remarkable. Elma is extremely knowledgeable and very aware of the needs of her clients. Recommended to anyone !!!”
by Terri Craib on 07/08/2009
“It's always a privilege to guide ancestral visitors and help them find the places their ancestors lived and worked. There's always a special connection with ex-pat Scots, regardless of how many generations removed, and Terri and her family were no exception. I found their family history absolutely fascinating, and also really enjoyed their company during the two days I was their guide.”

Tramps B & B in Drumnadrochit, Scotland
“The Tramps B & B in Drumnadrochit is the absolute best B & B we have ever been in. The rooms are excellent; the breakfasts are excellent; and the Scottish hospitality of Mary is priceless. If you are planning a trip to the Highlands, give Mary a call at The Tramps B & B; she is the best ther is.”

Glenelg Inn
“Situated at the end of the road with an oustanding view over to Skye from every hotel bedroom, the new owners and management of the Glenelg Inn have excelled themselves with their warm welcome, Scottish hospitality and fantastic food, viz the local prawn fishermen (and woman) who are regulars at the bar, Andrew Lloyd Weber and other famous faces who have their favourite room there...one of the best of Scotland for sure! 2009”

The Camera Shop, Perth
“This is what camera shops ought to be like – friendly, helpful, but not pressurising the customer. OK, so I went in for a camera case but came out with a new lens but that’s only because the price was right! Totally appropriate too that you find a shop like this in Perth, one of these Scottish tons where a selection of smaller shops still provide the backbone of a real shopping experience. (In this instance, the extra mile was also the willingness of the owner to dive into the window display to get exactly the right case.) ”

Clachtoll Beach Campsite
Clachtoll Beach Campsite“On arrival at the campsite last July, Jim and Ishbel not only made us most welcome but also helped us to erect our tent. Nothing was too much trouble and they both constantly checked with ourselves and other campers that we were happy with the facilities. They also had lots of advice and ideas on places of interest for us to visit whilst in the area.”

Clans & Castles Travel Service
Clans and Castles“We just completed an extraordinary 10-day family vacation in Scotland based on a customized itinerary developed with the expert services of Scottish Clans & Castles. The trip was a mix of city and country with a terrific blend of classic and modern hotels, as well as two top-notch B&B’s, namely Brough House (Elgin) and Ethie Castle (Arbroath). The arrangements were flawless, the accommodations perfect and it appeared to us that they were able to secure the rooms with the best views, every single time. To us, this was an unexpected benefit of dealing with a local expert and a reflection of the intimate knowledge of their recommendations. Dealing with Alastair and his team in planning this memorable trip was a wonderful experience and we are looking forward to returning, hopefully sooner than later. Hats off to Clans & Castles once more!”

iolaire photo:graphics
“We approached Tez Watson of Iolaire Photographics about producing some high-quality digital prints for display in Staffa House, our Bed & Breakfast establishment in Fionnphort, Isle of Mull. From the outset we received help and guidance of the highest standard from Tez. His knowledge and skill were great, but also his patience in giving us endless opportunities to see various possibilities and minor changes were invaluable and made us feel as though there was a real personal contact, even though the whole process was conducted through e-mails and phone calls. This was much more than just another sale for Tez, he took real care and interest in his work and we feel delighted that we stumbled across him. ”

PoLR Ltd
“First a letter in the post arrives out of the blue from these guys in Glasgow. It's about another website we run, and they're offering to do a free website health check. Oh, all right, then, we said. Sure enough, a couple of days later a two page report is attached on an email to us. It’s a ‘no obligation’ bit of work. And it contains some really interesting stuff. OK, so they’re in the business of SEO, and they’re looking for clients – but how often do you find a company who will go the extra mile right at the outset of any relationship and before any commitment is made? We’ve never met them but we are impressed!”

Isle of Barra Beach Hotel“Our family has had the most fantastic holidays here: solitude, swimming with the dolphins (honest) flying kites and walking in the wilderness, enjoying the most fantastic beach on earth; our kids age 11 and 14 now want to go back there to the solitude and beauty of the beach and the island; we shall return!”

“Wonderful B&B this. Mary and Alan are fantastic hosts, really took care of us when we were on a John O'Groats to Land's End cycle ride. I really can't recommend Tramps highly enough, and will definitely stay there again if I'm ever lucky enough to be in that beautiful part of Scotland.”

Open Road Hire
“Open Road Hire, Andrew Still, rent out Caterham sports cars. My brother-in-law bought it for Lynda (my wife) and I as a gift, but it's certainly something we'll do again for ourselves. The car was beautifully prepared and the effort Andrew put in to marking out routes and places of interest paid dividends. We followed the single track route to the southshore of Loch Tay. It was nothing short of spectacular. He's a really helpful guy and nothing is too much trouble. I'm a car nut and have had about 15 cars in 11 years (my wife does keep score!) but nothing, and I mean nothing, is as engaging as the little Caterham. It really is driving at its purest. For something so tactile, it also remarkably easy to drive and not intimidating. We took the car back to our timeshare at Gleneagles and all our guests wanted a ride in it. Mercifully we had to leave and explore the hills. The chefs at the hotel where we stopped for lunch also popped out to see it! Life enriching experience and great idea. Well done Andrew ”

Cullen Crafts
“I visited this shop while holidaying in Moray and fell in love. If I hadn't been a crafter before I would definitely take it up after visiting here. Ger who is the owner, couldn't have been more helpful, nothing was too much trouble and if she didn't stock it she offered to try to locate it for you or she was very quick to point you to another shop who did. Her prices have to be seen to be believed and when I commented on how reasonable they were she informed me that she is doing this shop for the love of it and if she can pass on goods at reasonable prices then that's what she does. She also has a gallery, stocking wool from another crafter and loads of beautiful handmade gifts from other local artists. I for one will definitely put it on my list of things to do in Moray and would highly recommend this shop. My only disappointment is that this girl has won no awards yet!”

Rothiemurchus (Aviemore/Cairngorm/Highlands)
“We took a Land Rover tour round the estate. The guides and all staff were so passionate about their jobs and the surroundings and our driver, Ray, had some lovely stories to tell. The place is breathtaking and an absolute must for anybody to visit to admire the scenery and wildlife. The clay pigeon shooting and quad bike trek looked great so i think i'll try that next time.”

Macdonald Holyrood Hotel
“Sometimes going the extra mile only takes a moment – it’s the fact that the ‘extramilee’ appreciates it that’s important. Picture the scene. It’s the underground carpark adjacent to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and it’s immediately after a Scottish Tourism Forum evening reception there. We return to the car. Cash for the parking fee? I have none. She has no handbag. We have one of those ‘But I thought you’d carry cash…’ conversations. I fume out of the carpark to find a cashpoint. Luckily, there’s one nearby. But I need coins. Where’s the nearest shop open at this time of night? Wait a minute, I’m passing the Macdonald Holyrood Hotel. Next moment, I’m inside, explaining to a smiling young man at reception of my plight – trapped in an underground carpark. It’s no problem, change is quickly produced and he finds the whole episode perfectly understandable and amusing. Problem solved. Just a few seconds of service-giving with charm and politeness. Under the circumstances, that’s an extra mile in my book. So we escaped imprisonment behind the barrier and will always have coins in the glove compartment from now on! ”

Highland Adventure, Glenisla
“This is a wonderful place for large groups - they can accommodate up to 60 people and will organise all kinds of outdoor activities on request. The building is a circular stone Victorian hunting lodge, with a welcoming log fire in the central round room which is ideal for socialising. Delicious home-made evening meals and cooked breakfasts are excellent, compared to some other hostel-type accommodation, while beds are very high quality & comfortable - and made up in advance, which isn't always the case. We've become regulars.”

Nunland lodges - Lochfoot, Dumfries
Nunland Country Holidays. Lochfoot. Dumfries.“We have visited these lodges several times over the past 4/5 years and love it here! The owners Mark and Liz are lovely and even went out of their way to be witnesses at our wedding 4 years ago as we went to Scotland without telling our family/friends and got married so had no witnesses to take with us!! It so peaceful and relaxing here while also being fairly close to Dumfries. We have just returned home after our latest visit here and our children loved it here too and didnt want to leave! Definitely recommended. ”

Belsyde Country House Bed & Breakfast, Linlithgow
“This is an excellent B&B. The fine old house is very comfortable, peaceful, spacious, and elegant, and successfully blends old-fashioned charm with modern standards and fittings. It's set in extensive and attractive grounds a couple of miles outside Linlithgow, one of the best small towns in central Scotland. Clearly the owners take pride in the standard of everything they offer. Our room was large, warm (in very cold weather), well equipped, and pleasing in every respect. A full Scottish cooked breakfast is on offer. It was perfectly cooked and served. We needed to be out early, and the owner gladly moved the starting time of breakfast earlier than advertised to suit us. That was the first 'extra mile.' The second arrived in the middle of breakfast, just after we'd eaten the cooked food: we were served a small plate of oatcakes, strawberries, blueberries, and brambles as a palate-cleanser before toast and coffee. This wasn't on the menu; it was just an additional thoughtful grace-note. This is one of those B&Bs that sets standards many a hotel cannot match. Highly recommended, then. Not cheap, but worth the price for what's on offer.”

Moray Coast Cottage
“"We make 2 or 3 trips to Scotland every year and have stayed in countless holiday cottages, but Moray Coast Cottage in Portessie beats them all. We could quite happily spend our entire holiday just gazing out of the windows at the stunning sea views and the spectacular sunsets. There’s an impressive selection of books, maps & leaflets with ideas for walks, days out, watching wildlife and generally making the most of the area. We found a basket of home-made goodies to welcome us on arrival and the cottage was absolutely spotless. Since discovering it, we’d never dream of going anywhere else."”

Ardenbeg Bunkhouse
Ardenbeg Bunkhouse“Having booked many trips to Ardenbeg for the young people in our organisation, I am very grateful to Rebecca who has provided excellent customer service and has been so accomodating each time. She always goes beyond expectations - she has sent us lots of information about the local area and funding for nearby amenities, she keeps us informed of availability and when on site she is very friendly and helpful. We plan to continue to visit Ardenbeg for years to come, and I would highly recommend it.”
by Tracey Macdonald on 04/02/2009
“Thank you so much for your commments. It is really important to Ardenbeg staff that visitors have relevant information before they visit, along with some local knowledge, particularly if a group is sticking to a tight budget. This allows groups to participate in say, canoeing or skiing and then complement the visit with the services of local Rangers or council facilities. This allows groups to make full use of the Cairngorms National Park environment but witin their chosen budget. We appreciate your comments and will continue to help other groups as best as we can.”

Clans & Castles Travel Service
Clans and Castles“While preparing for our first visit to Scotland, a family trip with our daughters (9,12) to discover my wife’s Scottish roots, I came across Alastair Cunningham of Clans and Castles, a company that specializes in creating customized itineraries for visitors to Scotland. It promised that all we had to do was book the flights and Alastair would look after the rest based on our needs and special interests, which ranged from my wife’s genealogical interests, our kids dietary aversion to haggis, to my need for a comfortable bed and good whisky! Without a shred of doubt, Alastair’s service has been invaluable in terms of creating an exciting itinerary with special arrangements that we could not have imagined without his extensive local knowledge and broad contacts relating to clans, castles and all other matters we have raised. He has gone the extra mile! It has been a real pleasure dealing with Alastair who is consummate professional. He has taken away all the worries of a planning a family trip to a new destination by skilfully honing an overwhelming choice of sites and lodgings into nine sensibly planned days. I am still waiting to see if he can fulfil my last request for the traffic flow to switch sides while we are there, but I won’t be surprised if he manages that as well! ”

Stagecoach Buses
“My car recently broke down and having realised it was going nowhere I decided to return home. I the spotted the local bus leaving a stop, ran across the road and flagged it down. I asked the driver if he could accept a card payment as I had no cash on me, explaining that I had just broken down. "No, problem" says the driver "I'll give you a ride back into Forres". Well done that man and many thanks. ”

The Isle of Gigha Hotel/Arts Centre
“Spent a fantastic Weekend on Gigha. Stayed at the Gigha Hotel and went to the Gaelic Language Course run in conjunction with the next door Arts. Have nothing but praise for the welcoming people on Gigha. The island is a paradise (even in November) and the hotel was very comfortable. Great room, very warm and comfortable and the best hotel bed and pillows in a long time. The food was fantastic and lovingly prepared - how they come up with such fresh salad and local produce on a small island puts many a city or big town restuarant to shame. The Saturday night folk music session was terrific. Loved everything about it and it's one of the most accessible islands from the central belt of Scotland. We'll be back soon.”

Ard Daraich Bed and Breakfast in Ardgour, Fort William area
Ard Daraich Bed and Breakfast in Ardgour, Fort William area“Best B&B we stayed at in Scotland. Norrie and Anna make you feel very much at home. When we got there it felt like we were meeting up with long lost relatives or old friends we hadn't seen in a long time. If you're only looking for a one night sleep over between destinations and are in a hurry, then this might not be the place for you, because Norrie and Anna are interested in getting to know you and tell you about the area. Beautiful garden too. We live in the United States and are coming back to Scotland some time and will definitely stay at the Ard Daraich for a longer time. - Andy and Colleen in Cincinnati”

Ardenbeg Bunkhouse
Ardenbeg Bunkhouse“I would like to commend Rebecca Reid of Ardenbeg Bunkhouse regarding her excellent customer service in my attempts to book a bunkhouse for New Year 2009-2010. Rebecca was very professional and efficient in her dealings with me and I sincerely appreciate her warmth and her efforts to assist myself and my party during our search. Rebecca is a credit to Tourism Scotland and deserves this little bit of praise. Best Regards, Donald Smith.”

“Dear Donald, Thank you for this praise, it is much appreciated. Recently many of the hostels in the Cairngorms National Park have found that through joint marketing efforts we are able to provide a better service to our customers. Often we are able to assist with meeting the customers' needs, even if they don't end up staying here at our own hostel. As more hostels join this group and participate in this method of recommendation, the better it is for the visitor (and hostel owner!) We do hope that you enjoy New Year 09/10 and keep coming back to the Cairngorms National Park! ”

Salmon Cottage self catering cottage, Kinghorn, Fife
“We booked Salmon Cottage direct from the owners website and Mary & George made us feel welcome from the very start. The cottage sits in an enviable position right on the beach within a natural little harbour. When we arrived at the property their housekeeper 'Jess' gave us a warm Scottish welcome and she really made us feel at home. We have no hesitation in recomending it to anyone, but we really want to keep it a secret all to ourselves. Tom & Jean Cargill & the girls.”

Finzean Farm Shop
“I hope it is okay to comment on a place that you go to regularly ? Finzean farm shop is about 26 miles west of Aberdeen. On a fine day with a beautiful view of Clochnaben and Peter hill, it is just the best pit stop for lovely tasty food. The frittata and salad that they do is so DELICIOUS that I order it every time I am there ! In the entrance area they sell loads of good local vegetables and fruit in season. Also duck and hen eggs. The fruit and veg has wee signs on it telling you what variety it is and who grew them (Bill's record tatties)etc. I think this is a really nice touch. It's a little gem of a place run by really nice people. ”

Ruddyglow Park
“The Lodge at Ruddyglow Park is just amazing. We decided to go north for my birthday and this has to be one of the most wonderful places we have ever stayed. The food was to die for (fresh local lobster and their own, wild, organic venison), the dining room and main house have a great atmosphere, and the hostess is just charming. The location, although remote, Is well worth the journey. There is nothing quite like this totally unspoiled natural beauty anywhere else on the planet. We are both looking forward to going back soon. ”

Speyside Heather Centre
“We visited the heather centre in August 08 and asked whether heathers could be put into the post as we couldn't transport the plants home (we were flying). We chose 10 heathers and the staff arranged to post them to us. The plants arrived the day after we returned home, the plants were in excellent condition and were well packaged. Further, an unrelated problem with something else we had bought from the heather centre was most amicably sorted out. Looking forward to visiting again. Thank you. ”

Chef William, Culdearn House Hotel
“I saw accolades about his Scottish Breakfasts on the net, so I e-mailed him and explained that our Gourmet Group was going to do Scottish Brunch and asked what was Lorne Sausage and Potato Scones and where could I find recipes. Not only did he most graciously respond, he sent recipes and detailed tips for success. The food was delicious and therefore the Brunch was a rousing success! He didn't just go an extra mile, he went about ten. Thank you! Janet Melby, Minnesota USA”

The But'n'Ben - Auchmithie
“Quite possibly the most hospitable, friendly, intelligent and warmest restaurant/pub owners on the planet. Food to die for, an outstanding location, a warm atmosphere and the best steak pie I have ever had in my life, and there have been a few. Well worth taking a major detour if you are anywhere in the Dundee/Forfar/St Andrews/Montrose area. Happy eating, and buy a drink for the chef too."”

Secret Scotland Tours
Secret Scotland“The best tour I have ever been on was the customised tour we pruchased from Secret Scotland! They made the planning of my vacation so easy - all I had to do was book the car, browse through their list of recommend B&Bs and book my accomodations. The driving directions were phenomenal and the scenery was breathtaking! We ended up visiting locations that I would never have thought to visit, had I planned the trip on my own, and can't imagine not visiting now. There were so many recommended sights that we actually extended our trip in order to see even more of them - something I have never done before. An absolutely amazing experience and one that I intend to do again in the near future! The service was superiour and I would recommend this company to anyone really wanting to explore Scotland to it's fullest!”

House of Tartan, Drummond St, Comrie
“Went into the House of Tartan in Comrie and asked about Mackenzie flashes. (These are the little bits of colour you see on a kilted Scot's socks when he's wearing his fancy dress. Normally they are in single colours.) Though they didn't have them ready-made, the friendly sales person offered me some MacKenzie tartan off-cut to make my own. Even better, he didn't want money for it. So he poured a box of materials out on the floor and we enjoyed some time searching for a piece the right length. Certainly an Extra Mile. I now have a wee sowing job for my mother-in-law. ”

Lochwood Farm Steading
Lochwood Farm Steading“This is a bed and breakfast(with self catering too) that makes you want to rebook on leaving. Wonderful host, Elaine, who cooks the best breakfast that we have ever enjoyed, and still finds time to chat and be friendly. Saltcoats is worth a visit too, wonderful beach! The accomodation is spotlessly clean and with beds, pillows and duvets that are probably better than you have at home! For the first time ever in 30+ years of traveling all over the world I brought my own pillow, as usual, but didn't use it!”

Newtonmore
“I chose randomly a remote place in Scotland, as I am from Luxembourg, and it happened that I chose Newtonmore, a nice lovely village where I stayed in the Newtonmore Hostel, for a very cheap money, and the service ( it is run by a family) was more than good. Everything was really clean and hot, and the mountains around with their exceptionnal trails are worth a stay in Newtonmore. So don't hesitate and go to Newtonmore, the train station is in Kingussie, just 3 miles above, but Pete and family , the owners, will undoubtely come and pick you up!”
by Philip Birget on 03/10/2008
“Philip, many thanks for your kind words and good too see you gain this January. Newtonmore also has a train station although only a few trains, its just a short walk to the hostel from our station.”
by Peter Main - Newtonore Hostel on 05/02/2009
“And don't forget to visit the Newtonmore Folk Museum, not the best name, and the brochure isn't the most inspiring, and first impressions are cool, however when you eventually reach the buildings rebuilt in 1700's style and listen to the really friendly guides, absolutely wonderful. Open only at certain times of the year, but well worth a visit. ”

Violet Bank House, Lanark Rd. The Café, Stromness
“I was having lunch in here recently. I ordered a local Orkney beer. A few minutes later, the friendly waitress came over and said that the beer I had chosen was the last one and not cold - she suggested another beer - Northern Light. She described what it was like and said it was nice and cold. She could have just served the warm beer - but she certainly went the extra mile - the beer was great too!”

Violet Bank House, Edinburgh
“We have just returned from our first visit to Scotland. First port of call was Violet Bank House and what an introduction to the country. Reta and John are perfect, warm hosts for whom nothing is too much trouble. The whole place is spotless and the breakfast a real treat which sets you up for the day.We had to leave for the flight home at 7am and so were expecting nothing more than a cup of coffee and maybe some toast. They wouldn't hear of it and gave us the full breakfast at 6.30! That's above and beyond the call of duty and is certainly going the extra mile. Without doubt the best place we've ever stayed in the UK.”

Loch Garten RSPB Reserve, near Boat of Garten
“We visited the Osprey centre 3 times over a 2 week holiday after following the progress of the birds on the web-cam. There were different staff on each visit but each was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and approachable, we were able to use the telescopes and binoculars and watch video footage and listen to talks about the ospreys while the nest was empty. I would recommend the Osprey centre to anyone interested in wildlife - loads of different birds and red squirrels to see. The staff are a credit to the RSPB their love of their job shines through and they pass their enthusiasm to visitors.”

Farthings@Home
Farthings@Home“Last week while visiting Blair Atholl, I discovered a delightful boutique called Farthings@home selling gifts, plants and attractive dried flowers. I witnessed what must be a true extra mile moment. Jill Farthing, the owner, offered (free of charge) a glass of homemade lemonade to an elderly gentleman who was feeling the heat. This for me summed up the charm and thoughtfulness of both shop and owner. ”

Ptarmigan Dining - Cairngorm Mountain
Cairngorm Mountain“Quite simply 'THE' dining experience that you should try when in the Aviemore area. The food was of the highest quality and was superbly presented. The attention to detail over and above this added to the evening, from the welcome to Cairngorm dining messages on the electronic signs as you approached the venue through to the fleece blankets provided for warmth in the funicular on the way up and down from the venue. Finally, mention has to be made of the staff who were as attentive and genuinely friendly as I have ever encountered whilst dining out. Overall, a must do dining experience - as recognised by the Herald (if I recall correctly) who listed this as one of their top 25 dining experiences.”

Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre
Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre“As an incomer to the area (28 years now) I have been keen to learn about Highland history. Over the years my family and I have visited Culloden on a number of occasions but our most recent visit (following the replacement of the visitor centre) was the most interesting and informative (even heart-moving). What The National Trust for Scotland have done is go way beyond the extra mile in order to make the place more accessible, more relevant and more exciting. The use of technology to enhance the experience, in particular the handsets on the battlefield and the immersion theatre stand out as truly innovative. They could so easily have opted for "more of the same". Instead, we as a nation are the beneficiaries. Let's give them credit for doing something bold and creative...”

Simply Red Restaurant, Forres
“These guys know how to make a guest feel welcome, the atmosphere is spot-on both day and night. The decor is stylish, practical and comfortable, the food is tasty, well presented and well priced. But the extra mile is this - call in for coffee/tea in the morning or afternoon and get FREE pastries (freshly made on the premises that morning). Whether you take my "grippit" nature to originate from my Scots origins or Yorkshire upbringing I'll leave you to decide, but something genuinely (and sincerely) for free in this day and age is worth telling folk about. By the way the RED stands for "Relax, Eat and Drink" - says everything. They're in Leys Road in Forres. No website, so tel is 01309 676737”

Clachtoll Beach Campsite“This site cannot be recommended too highly, from the minute you arrive Jim and Ishbel (the owners)go out of their way to make your stay a memorable one. It is the most child and adult friendly site in Scotland, and though quite a distance away it is one that should not be missed on any account.”

Cutlars Lodge, Orroland Holiday Cottages, Dumfries & Galloway
“Cutlars lodge is my favourite place to get away from it all in Dumfries and Galloway. On a private estate, its a self catering detached cottage in its own grounds - no neighbours (except cows, sheep and pheasant). On a clear night the sky is black and the stars are bright - no light pollution here - quite amazing. The owners are very friendly and helpful and live elsewhere on the estate - on hand if needed. I've stayed at Cutlars for a week each year, for many years - most recently in May 2008. It’s the place itself that covers that "extra mile" that you are looking for. Added to that the fact the owners are genuinely enthusiastic that you enjoy your holiday - plus the fact that many go back again speaks for itself”

Isle of Barra Beach Hotel
Isle of Barra Beach Hotel“Wearing my other hat as a media trip planner I recently booked a room for a Dutch travel writer at the Isle of Barra Beach Hotel. The new owners, Teresa Jenkins & Guy Adams could not have been more helpful. They certainly went the extra mile for this journalist. They arranged a private guided walk of the island plus a visit to Barra Power Kiting and lastly they hosted a dinner featuring Barra's excellent scallops. This was all entirely unprompted. I have been doing this job for 18 years and I have rarely come across such PR-savvy hoteliers! They obviously love what they do and are keen to put Barra on the map!”

Delivino Delicatessen & Wine Café, Crieff
Delivino Delicatessen & Wine Café “I ate here with friends recently. They told me that the food and service was very good. I fancied a calzone instead of an ordinary pizza, but this didn't feature on their menu - but the gentleman who served me didn't flinch when I asked for it - he said chef was happy to oblige! - I even got to select my own choice of fillings - it was delicious as was the rest of our meal! This is everything a neighbourhood bistro should be - and a real asset in Crieff. The friendly service definitely went the extra mile! Delivino is at 6 King Street, just below James Square in the centre of Crieff. Tel 01764 655665. ”

Greatbase Luxury Self Catering Apartments, Edinburgh
“Greatbase provided us with a lovely flat in Edinburgh in April 2008. It was halfway up the Royal Mile and handy for all parts of the city. The furnishings were all good quality and the bedding was particularly good - our son suffers from asthma and he was fine with the duvets and pillows used(which tends to be a problem in self-catering accommodation). We were provided with milk, tea, coffee, oatcakes and some home-made shortbread biscuits on arrival. Definitely somewhere we'd recommend.”

Arnold Clark Vehicle Rental - Dalcross,Inverness
“I cannot praise Andy and Theresa at the Dalcross (airport) branch enough. We needed to hire a vehicle urgently at very short notice and were prepared to take whatever was available. Andy knew what we normally drove because we had hired from them before and without being asked, drove to another branch and brought back a vehicle for us specially so that it was waiting for us when we got there. The vehicle that we got was perfect for our needs and Andy's thoughtfulness and attention to detail really helped us out of a difficult situation. We are in the tourism business and we try to exceed the expectations of our clients. It's nice to know that people working for a big company like Arnold Clark have the same approach! ”

Viewfield House, Portree, Skye
Viewfield House“A wonderful place to stay at on Skye. The rooms are amazingly grand, and the owner, Hugh MacDonald, is most obliging in giving his guests a guided tour of the family portraits and trophies. A word to the wise : in the Great Hall, the stuffed bird called a "Croatian Chocolate Vulture, killed by Bolshevik artillery in 1914" is a Golden Eagle. Mentioning the historical discrepancy earned me an introduction to the best single malt of all : Highland Park 18 years-old, a nectar from the Orkney Islands. And a fitting tipple for a most magical island.”

Glendavan House, Dinnet“Among the many great places to stay that were recommended to us in our itinerary, prepared by Secret Scotland, Glendavan House stands out. Moira Milne and her daughter Rebecca, the owners of this ultra-comfortable B&B near Dinnet, in Deesside, are exemplary hosts, and set our highest definition of Scottish hospitality. Secret Scotland“The smartest decision we made in preparing our Spring 2008 visit to the Highlands was clicking on the Secret Scotland site. It turned agonizingly difficult touring options into an easy to follow, precisely informed and perfectly indicated road book that even we were able to follow... while driving on the wrong side of the road. We would strongly encourage future visitors to Scotland to save time, money, energy and anxiety by buying an itinerary from Mike and Aurelia at Secret Scotland. Violet Bank House, Lanark Rd. Edinburgh“We are from Germany and we stayed at the B&B of Reta McLennan (Violet Bank House) in Edinburgh. It was fantastic. The landlady Reta and her husband was very lovable hosts. The B&B was very clean and very comfortable. The breakfast was very good. Every day fresh fruit and many different things. The table was always beautifully set. When we had a wish or a question always we got help - the more so as my English isn't so good. For us it was a perfect Holiday in Edinburgh and we are sure to come back to Edinburgh and back to Reta and John McLennan in Violet Bank House. Stefan and Gudrun Werner from Berlin ”

Boogie Woogie
Boogie Woogie“I recently sent a group of journalists along to Boogie Woogie as part of their three day trip touring the North of Scotland. On meeting them at the end of their trip, I heard nothing but praise from the great welcome they received when they visited Boogie Woogie for a lunch stop. Not only did they feel welcomed from the moment they stepped in the door, they raved about the lovely fresh food and said it was one of the highlights of their trip. The only regret was that they didn't have more time to browse and spend money in the lovely gift shop! ”

Cairngorm Mountain“Just back from a magnificent day skiing on the Cairngorms. Exhausted as conditions are brilliant with overall snow cover and there are no queues. The facilities are now unrecognisable from my skiing days in the 60's,70's and 80's and the staff all went out of their way to make it a terrific experience. Congratulations to Cairngorm Mountain who have kept going through lots of hard times and have created a great visitor experience.”

The Bean Shop, Perth
The Bean Shop“I visited The Bean Shop in George Street, Perth for the 1st time on Friday. Wow, what a great shop! My friends and I were offered a free (delicious) espresso coffee while we decided which of the amazing teas and coffees we wanted to buy. John Bruce, the fantastically enthusiastic and knowledgable owner explained he had been born in Darjeeling on a tea plantation and had been a tea and coffee lover from a very early age. This small shop certainly exceeded my expectations with the friendly service, free sample of coffee and superb products. I expect to become a regular!”

Mountview - Saorsa Log Cabin in Lochinver, Sutherland
Mountview - Saorsa Log Cabin in Lochinver, Sutherland“This stunning log cabin (Saorsa is Gaelic for freedom) was the perfect setting for our relaxing Easter holiday. The cabin was located right on the loch in Lochinver, and had everything you would need during your holiday. We were greeted by a tray of tea and homemade fruit cake when we arrived. Roy & Suzi have worked hard on this log cabin, and I daresay on their other holiday properties too. As soon as I arrived my stresses melted away and we had a relaxing but active week in the stunning highlands. Other guests obviously agree as their visitor book (from 1997) is packed with wonderful comments and tips for walks, boat trips, places to eat etc. The information (walks, days out, maps) provided by Roy & Suzi allowed us to make the most of our time in Scotland. I can highly recommend this log cabin for those who just want to stay in and relax or as a perfect retreat after a busy day exploring the wildlife and mountains. The views of Suilven are lovely. I cannot wait to go back.”
by Katie Ebbs on 01/04/2008
“Just come back from our 3rd visit to Saorsa in 9 years. This place is very special as it sits right on Loch Inver and has fantastic views of the mountains and the loch (including the coming and goings of the boats). There are also many walks you can do in the local area including one right from your door step. The cabin is very well cared for and has been updated each time we have visited so everything is kept modern and in good condition. The homemade cake on arrival is excellent!”

There is everything you could want from this place, we were lucky with weather 22-25c all week Phew! will go back again another year, but would like to keep this gem to ourselves - but that would not be fair on others”

Cologin self catering chalets, near Oban
Cologin Farm - self catering chalets, lodges & cottages “We just had a weekend family get-together staying in Cologin chalets, just south of Oban. Oban is a very nice town, easy to walk around and bustling with the ferries coming and going to the islands. Cologin is a great venue for such a family or group occasion. Once settled you can forget the car and take various walks through the woods to many vantage points with dramatic views over the countryside. In the evening we had a great time in the Barn, a pub/restaurant, on the grounds of Cologin and therefore no need to drive. Anglers' Inn, Guildtown
Anglers' Inn, Guildtown“What was a fairly anonymous roadside inn on the A93 between Perth and Blairgowrie has been transformed into a great country eaterie by Jeremy Wares. This is what pub grub should be about in this day and age. We arrived early for our reservation but that didn't perturb the cheerful and efficient waiting staff on what was a busy Sunday lunchtime. Great roast beef and yorkshire pudding, fish and chips, sorbets, spotted dick and custard were the choices from the menu and our wee one was accommodated with no bother with simple children's menu on offer which largely offers scaled down offerings from the main menu. It was great to see the local Inveralmond Brewery's offerings on tap as well. ”

House for an Art Lover Cafe, Bellahouston Park“On a sunny afternoon, took the kids to Bellahouston Park in Glasgow. They enjoyed watching the skiers, and snowboarders, played in the playground. Kids being kids they were soon ravenous - the staff in the House for an Art Lover Cafe could not have been more helpful. From producing crayons and worksheets from upstairs to tailoring the menu to our youngest childs chip request and catering for number one daughter's latest vegetarian fad they made the whole experience pleasant and relaxing - not often the case when travelling with children. Caffe Canto
“What a contrast in welcomes! On a busy Saturday morning in Perth, the large Threshold café at Perth Concert Hall couldn’t be bothered putting on real coffee or even hot chocolate because, they said, they had a conference in. Fortunately, we found a really friendly place just around the corner. At Caffe Canto on George Street they greeted us, sat us down, offered hot or cold milk with Americano, explained the difference between a very milky latte and a white coffee with an extra shot and, in general, demonstrated they cared about their customers. Sometimes it's the little gestures that make a difference. We’ll go back there!”

Secret Scotland
Secret Scotland“I just wanted to let you know about the fantastic service we received from Secret Scotland! We came across the Secret Scotland website and decided to purchase their 5 day Scenic Tour around Loch Ness, Plockton etc. We also booked our accommodation through their accompanying guide. What a brilliant purchase it turned out to be! The guide was clear and concise and so accurate that we didn't need either a map or sat nav for the whole journey. They included some wonderful out-of-the-way places that we probably would never have found on our own - beautiful little waterfalls etc! They also included some 'rainy day' activities - more sites/activities than you could possibly have seen, and all carefully researched and thought through. We decided that we'd really like to have a day to go horse riding - but didn't know where. I e-mailed Mike at Secret Scotland and he recommended 2 different riding centres - one just outside Gairloch if we wanted to ride through forests, and one on Skye if we wanted dramatic scenery. We went to Skye and it was great! We stayed in a really lovely B&B in Plockton (An Caladh) and one of the highlights of the trip was definitely Dry Island in Badachro! Ian and his wife were so welcoming - and we went out on Ian's fishing boat one morning and watched him as he pulled up the creels ... it was wonderful and really brought Scotland alive for us! Thanks to Secret Scotland for one of the most memorable and stress free holidays we've ever had!! We'll be going back to Scotland next year to follow another of their guides! ”

Inveroich House, Fort Augustus“In need of a short break my wife and I booked Inveroich House (a stunning house at the head of Loch Ness)and planned to arrive Saturday and leave Tuesday morning. The owner, Peter Prendergast gave us the tour, demonstrated how everything worked and where to find the firewood, coal, etc. We settled in and enjoyed a wonderful relaxing break, breathing in the clear autumn air, taking in the local scenery and generally unwinding. Then on the Sunday evening Peter phoned from his home in Elgin to say that if we wished we could stay for the rest of the week (no extra charge!)but sadly our business commitments and domestic arrangements ruled this out.”

Riverside Lodges, Invergloy
Riverside Lodges, Invergloy“We recently spent a fabulous short break at one of these lodges and would highly recommend them. They were in pristine condition with a very well equipped kitchen and many other extras. We look our 2 dogs and we were all made to feel very welcome. We enjoyed some lovely flapjacks whilst the dogs enjoyed some Bonios that had been kindly left. We spent morning walks in the beautiful grounds and the dogs had a splash down in the loch. Hoping to go back in the New Year. It's rare to find such a super place that is so dog friendly. On walking into the lodges you would never know any animal had been there before as the cleanliness is first rate. ”

GNER - Aberdeen to London Train
GNER - Aberdeen to London Train“My daughter and I travelled from Dundee to London on Monday 19th November, returning on Friday 23rd.We travelled south on the 11.06 from Dundee and home again on the 14.00 from London Kings Cross. On both journeys we were very impressed by the steward in First Class. His name is Graham Crighton, based in Aberdeen. On the journey south he had realised the seat reservations were unsuitable for 2 people travelling together and greeted us when we boarded to say he had kept suitable alternative seats. He was extremely helpful and cheerful throughout that journey and when he saw us again on the return journey, he remembered us and asked about our stay in London and brought us magazines another passenger had left. He also helped with our luggage when we reached our destination (we don't travel light!). He was friendly, cheerful and helpful to all the passengers and a credit to GNER. I feel that service like that should be recognised and encouraged - it is very rare these days.”

Raigmore Hospital and Alastair Cunningham of Clans and Castles
Clans and Castles“While traveling in Scotland, I experienced a retinal tear. This was an emergency and I received treatment at the Eye Clinic at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. Our tour guide, Alastair Cunningham, made calls and remade plans to see that I received the care I needed. My traveling companions read my Travelers’ Insurance and called to place a claim on file for me. My treatment at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness made me feel that at all times that I was in good hands. Eye surgery wasn’t on our original itinerary but it was covered extremely well when it became necessary. Thank you Alastair Cunningham of Clans and Castles; all the staff at Raigmore Hospital and all my traveling companions. Thank you. ”

The Crown and Anchor, Findhorn
“This site is a great idea. I'd like to recommend the Crown and Anchor Hotel in Findhorn. We visit Findhorn frequently and the Crown and Anchor is a great place. It doesn't matter if you're in for a pint after a walk, or if you're in for a meal, the service is always great - friendly and professional. And the food is first class too. On the few occasions we've been there when demand exceeds the kitchen's capabilities the service is exactly what it should be: informative, realistic and honest. If there's a half hour wait, then there's a half hour wait. And it's a very pleasant wait too - with good company and good beer. Quality is never compromised; the customer is always first. A gem of a place. I guess that's why it's so popular. ”

Cullen Bay Hotel, Cullen
Cullen Bay Hotel“We've recently returned from yet another stay at the Cullen Bay Hotel. This hotel has now taken all the decision making out of our UK holidays - we just wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. The family running this establishment, Marjory & Jim and their two sons Simon & Douglas, together with their staff, just could not do more to make your stay special & relaxed - nothing is too much trouble. (Wet clothes/boots disappear to the drying room, ice packs re-appear in the morning re-frozen). For our latest stay the hotel was full, both with holiday-makers and locals coming in for the superb evening meals (all prepared with fresh local produce) - but despite this, the family still managed to make everyone feel as if they were the only guests. The location is fantastic - the comfortable, relaxing dining room overlooks Cullen Bay on the Moray Firth and our room also had a super sea view. The only bad thing we can say about our stay was having to leave at the end of it”

The Coach House Coffee Stop, Luss
The Coach House Coffee Stop“This is a truly excellent experience in every way. Consistently friendly and efficient service offered in a cared for environment. An excellent range of fresh food and cake and a quality gift shop. The kind of place your mum AND your teenage niece would think was cool. Worth considering on a crisp winter's day, enjoy a refreshing walk along the banks of Loch Lomond, visit the parish church - itself a gem and then stop for lunch or afternoon tea. A warm welcome awaits. ”

Newtonmore
Newtonmore “Newtonmore was a highlight for me as it provided a relaxing, homey atmosphere where I could rest up, get outdoors and let go of the hectic-ness that can accompany a trip abroad. Newtonmore also has a wonderful food co-op and colorful shop keepers - like Liz. That woman is a bundle of energy and information with great compassion for the world traveler. She helps run the cafe/craft/information shop along with David, an artist and jovial character who has a lovely garden in the back which you can see sitting in the cafe. I spent a few hours there as they provide internet access. Hiking around Newtonmore is not to be missed. Go down to the BobCat Trail office - more maps and info on where to walk. I stayed at Newtonmore Hostel run by Peter Main. It was a very clean, organized, cozy hostel in center of Newtonmore, not far from the Macpherson Museum. I liked Peter's approach to recycling and conservation of resources and respect for the land. He was very helpful in sharing information about the variety of activities to do in Newtonmore. Plenty of maps and guide books to peruse in the evening next to a cozy wood stove. The Macpherson Museum had an excellent exhibition of Clan Macpherson artifacts, illustrations, paintings, and stories illuminating different Macpherson characters through Highland history. I was able to sit in on a lecture with a highly regarded scholar on tartan. His talk included that great wry highland sense of humor. Not a dry lecture at all. The lecture was accompanied with bagpipes, highland dancing and singing. A rich cultural exposure. www.newtonmore.com/macpherson/ ”

Torbay Lodge Guest House, Dumfries
Torbay Lodge Guest House, Dumfries“Just wanted to say that we recently stayed at The Torbay Lodge in Dumfries and was very impressed with our stay. We made a last minute decision to re-visit Dumfries and found Torbay on the internet. The hosts couldn't have been more helpful and went out of their way to provide as much information as possible about the surrounding area. The Casa Mia restaraunt and the Cavens arms (recommended) are excellent places to eat. ”

Loch Shiel Cruises, Glenfinnan
Loch Shiel Cruises, Glenfinnan“On holiday on Loch Sunart, we phoned ahead to book a cruise on Loch Shiel starting from Glenfinnan. When we arrived, we were surprised to find that my wife and I were the only potential passengers that afternoon on the 50-seater MV Sileas. However there was never a hint from owner Jim Michie that the cruise would be cancelled, and we were rewarded with a wonderful eagle & deer watching cruise down the loch in spectatcular weather with Jim as our highly knowledgable personal guide. Truly the extra nautical mile!”
by Rob Kelly on 11/10/2007
“Visitors should also take a look at the Extra Mile comment on Glenfinnan House Hotel elsewhere on this site. We would suggest a meal (at least) at the hotel as well as a cruise, just to make it an even better experience of Lochaber. Superb bar lunches here. ”

Meall mo Chridhe - Little Hill of My Heart
Meall mo Chridhe - Little Hill of My Heart “Just such a beautiful B & B in a fabulous location, that is so worth the wonderfully breath taking journey to reach the Applecross peninsula. Everything about this place is special, the hospitality, the rooms and the fabulous breakfast that Avril cooked up. You must add this to your travel itinerary and take away a beautiful memory.”
by Mike Franks on 27/09/2007
“Applecross ought to be on everyone's list of places to see before they die. The road to Applecross is the closest Britain comes to an Alpine pass. The journey is not as nerve-straining as it was 30 years ago, but it's still spectacular. The reward is arriving at a magical, truly remote, and beautiful place. There's nowhere better to stay in Applecross than Meall mo Chridhe, which is all you could ask for in a B&B.”
by Rob and Margot Watt on 19/12/2008
“I stay in Applecross often and have only ever heard similar comments to this. This is not your run-of-the mill B&B, it really is something special. Mr & Mrs Collis go out of their way to make guests welcome in this beautiful house and superb location”

Motorparty classic car hire
Motorparty classic car hire“Avril and Martin run one of the most interesting businesses I have come across. I have always wanted to drive an e-type Jaguar, and I came across a website where you can hire a selection of classic and vintage cars, just for a day or for longer if you want. So I booked the white e-type for 2 days where my wife and I took a trip to Edinburgh. What an experience, the car was just fantastic and the scenery amazing, but the best bit was the service. Avril was so accommodationg when I had to change the dates, and Martin delivered the car to my hotel and very patiently helped me to understand the car. The whole experience was just perfect, the car was not in 'showroom' condition so I felt very comfortable driving it as it was a real car to drive. The extra mile ??? without a doubt.”

Bluebell Croft, Strontian
Bluebell Croft, Strontian“We spent two weeks at Bluebell Croft this summer at Bill and Sukie's self catering cottages on their croft at Strontian. Even before the cottages were built Bill and Sukie went the 'extra mile' by consulting all the past regulars at their restaurant with rooms to make these the best self catering cottages you have ever stayed in - really spacious and comfortable, beautifully furnished and with a bespoke kitchen (equipped by a chef for people who actually cook), Aga,hotel quality bathrooms, enough space to dry dozens of wet wellies, walking boots, coats etc... children's bedroom with blackout blinds so the children go to sleep in the evening!..... toys, books, games, maps, guide books, etc... Bill and Sukie are so friendly, welcoming and helpful that it feels more like staying with friends - within hours of our arrival Sukie scooped up our youngest(age 3) and carried him off to his great delight, with older sister in tow, to meet the lambs and feed the chickens. You can order a wide range of food - fresh baked bread, fresh eggs, home smoked salmon, fantastic fruit cake, salad from the polytunnel, vegetables, fruit, home made ice-cream - without exception absolutely delicious. You can even order a 5 course gourmet dinner party - not just delivered but cooked in the cottage kitchen and served to you as if you were in a restaurant. One final thing - the friends we had stayed with had their car broken into on the way up and lost all their clothes including the kids wellies. On hearing this Sukie went round her friends to borrow a pair of the right size wellies for each child and even managed to get Batman ones to replace the lost pair. If that isn't going the extra mile, what is? ”
by Sara and David Waterfield on 25/09/2007
“Couldn't agree more! Bill and Sukie run a fabulous set of houses - the first self-catering accomodation that really has felt like home. Bill's smoked salmon and fat bacon were just amazing, and the welcome pack of food is the best we've ever had. Another instance of the extra mile? Our son is the same age as their youngest (10), and was made to feel so welcome that he was taken off to the local youth club! Everything is just great - from the lifestyle to the location to the local scenery and amenities. Beware - this may become an addiction (we've already booked for next year!)...”

Riverside Lodges, Invergloy
Riverside Lodges, Invergloy“We recently spent a week in one of the beautiful Riverside Lodges in Invergloy. Our arrival was made special with Steve and Marilyn there to meet us and show us around. Our lodge was in immaculate condition, with a superb kitchen, everything you might need to make you feel at home and comfortable. There were fresh flowers on the table and home made shortbread biscuits and flapjacks to revive us. We went to Scotland to celebrate the wedding of our youngest daughter, Susan, and her fiancé, Geoff. Marilyn at Riverside recommended a really talented hairdresser called Karen, who went out of her way to help Susie keep calm and look beautiful. Marilyn and Steve offered to look after our daughter's dog while we ate a sumptuous wedding meal at the "Glen Spean Lodge". Then, after being so kind, when we got back to the lodge they had decorated the "honeymoon lodge" with balloons and ribbons. I would like to say, and I know I can speak for all 12 of us, how grateful we all are for the thoughtful, kind and welcoming way in which Steve and Marilyn looked after us. Keep up the excellent work Steve and Marilyn. Thanks again for helping to make Susie's wedding a tremendous success. Love from Tricia and Stuart Kinnear ”

Little Carron Cottage B&B, St Andrews
“We have just come back from our second visit to Little Carron Cottage. The socond visit was even better than the first and have booked again for a third time. The hospitality shown by Jim and Linda is second to none and the standard of Accomadation is fantastic. The room we get doesn't just comprise a bedroom and an ensuite bathroom -it includes your own private lounge, really handy for that extra space, and it has french doors that lead straight out you own part of the garden and patio which you are welcome to use. Not only is the standard of accomdation well above the 4* it's the little extras that make the real differnce (bowl of strawberries and lovely fresh flowers). I cannot go on enough about this fantastic place.”

The Little Soap and Candle Company and Tea Garden, Drumbeg Sutherland
The Little Soap and Candle Company and Tea Garden“What an absolute hidden gem of a place. The tea garden situated on the north side of the village of Drumbeg is an absolute treat. The owner is the lady who makes all the soaps and candles and welcomes you to her shop with a warm smile. She bakes the cakes and provides teas and coffee in her own little garden at the back of the shop. The whole experience was fantastic. Even on a dreich day when suddenly the shop was full of people (it is tiny) she was welcoming to everyone. We would recommend a detour along the coast road to visit this special place which has left a mark on us because of the warm welcome and service we experienced. We only wish there were more places like this.”

Bunroy Holiday Lodges
“We have just returned from our 2nd stay at Bunroy - once again we have had a relaxing holiday. An excellent, quiet site run by Andy & Gail who give you a warm welcome and are always smiling. The extra mile experience with the lodge I feel is its beautiful setting, close to the river, beyond an open field with views of the Ben Nevis range. Opening the curtains in the morning you could not wish for a better view. ”

It is all very thoughtfully done. It is no surprise that they have lots of "regulars". Mr and Mrs Campbell are local people, welcoming and friendly, and know the islands and the locals very well; their love of the islands is infectious. ”

Lothian Buses No 26 Bus
Lothian Buses “Comments about Lothian Bus drivers are often negative, but as a new and now frequent user of No 26, I have to commend the driver today who got off the bus, crossed the busy road and helped an elderly lady across to board the bus. This is one of several instances of random kindness/extra mileness I have seen recently on No 26 from Seton Sands.”
by Colin Arthur on 05/09/2007

Hebridean Celtic Festival, Isle Of Lewis
Hebridean Celtic Festival, Isle Of Lewis“For five out of the past six years, my wife and I have returned to Stornoway, Isle Of Lewis, for The Hebridean Celtic Festival. The quality of the musical offerings, the courtesy and efficiency of the Festival staff and the overall friendliness and goodwill of the islanders have made this our choice for traditional music venues worldwide. Whether it is in the Festival Tent, at the exquisite An Lanntair Arts Center, or just over a friendly pint for a session at McNeill's Pub (our favorite) we have always felt that warm glow that tells you that you have come "home". We plan to travel back to Lewis from The Bronx, New York, for many years to come!”

Dolly's B&B and Digby Chick Restaurant“We spent 5 days at Dolly's. I'd adopt her as my second mom. Great breakfasts, wonderful room with amazing views, and she did too many errands for us to mention. The bus stops right in front. 1 mile from the airport Digby Chick restaurant in town was as good as any restaurant we ate at in Paris-at 1/3 the price. Next time we plan to eat almost every dinner there. (Restaurant tel: 01851 700026)”

Kiltearn House - Evanton
Kiltearn House “Well am I glad to find this site, we have just stayed at Kiltearn House which is without doubt the Highlands' best kept secret. The accommodation, beds, setting, food and everything else was top class. Paul and Lin were the perfect hosts and there was nothing that was too much trouble. All our meals were perfectly cooked and presented and imaginatively planned. No two meals were the same but all were gastronomic experiences - no messy sauces to mask the tastes just honest, quality dishes from fresh ingredients that made you look forward to the next day's delight. The breakfast set you up for a day of exploring the vast selection of things to do in the area and a bit further afield. Our only complaint - the holiday passed too quickly! We will return. ”

Newtonmore Hostel
“Just wanted to record what a wonderful reception we received by Peter and Kathryn at the Newtonmoremore Hostel, Invernessshire. After a long ride north on motorcycles all four of us much appreciated a warm welcome in addition to the immediate offer of housing our Harleys under cover. Certainly reccommend Newtonmore Hostel to my friends.”

Northern Light Charters
“Mark Henrys and Hannah Thompson own and operate Northern Light Charters, taking guests on small-boat tours from Oban to destinations throughout the Hebrides and, occasionally, well beyond. I have traveled on a number of cruises with Northern Light over the past 6 years. Their service has always been exceptional, but until recently, I did not realize that it is in fact world-class. Trips on similar-sized boats in Europe, Mexico and Canada have convinced me that no one provides small boat cruises of quality comparable to that offered by Mark and Hannah on Hjalmar Bjorge. There is fastidious attention to detail from initial inquiry onwards, high standards of comfort and safety, excellent food, convivial atmosphere—and the Hebrides and west coast of Scotland as a glorious backdrop to the whole experience. Highest recommendations!”

Cardhu Distillery
Cardhu Distillery“Dropped in here as I was passing by with a group of 3 couples from the USA. Upon enquiring about a tour, we were offered a tasting and nosing tour. This turned out to be the most fascinating experience for us all. Not only did we have the tour of the distillery but afterwards we were given 4 whiskies together with different foods that complimented their tastes and fragrances. In my 25 years of visiting distilleries this has to rank as one of the most memorable thanks to the enthusiasm, knowledge and charm of Emma our Guide. Well worth travelling the extra miles for!”

Tom-na-creige B&B in Onich
Tom-na-creige B&B in Onich“My husband and I visited Scotland for the first time this spring. We didn't know our way around and weren't sure what sights we wanted to see! But the owners of this b & b were so helpful and lent us their own maps, telephoned ahead to make sure places were open and just were happy to advise on things we might like to do. It made such a difference to us getting the most from the visit. The place itself was lovely, we were in a twin room that looked out over the loch and we could also see to Glencoe. The breakfasts were great with home-made preserves, and there was lots of choice too for my husband who's vegetarian. Basically we were made to feel really welcome, like a home-from-home, with some of the best scenery in Scotland on the doorstep!”

The Lime Tree Hotel - Fort William
The Lime Tree“On our recent Lands End to John O'groats cycle trip, we stayed at this fantastic hotel. It was a warm welcome from a lot of horrors that we had encountered the previous days. The rooms were huge and lovely, with great bathrooms and comfy beds. However the best part was the evening, as pre dinner drinks were in the front living room overlooking the loch, with a roaring fire. Dinner then in the restaurant was outstanding, and later a private cinema viewing of titanic in the gallery topped the evening off. I thoroughly recommend this to anyone searching for a hotel that goes that bit further, and I can't wait to go back. ”

“Lime Tree Fort William Excites all your senses. Superb food cooked in front of your eyes, a stunning exhibition in the gallery, friendly staff, and style without stuffiness. We've been for both dinner and Sunday lunch - when the minister whose manse the building used to be was eating. How good a recommendation is that? Certain other places in Fort William charge top-end prices for mid-quality product. The Lime Tree does top-end product for remarkably modest prices.”

taste braemar
“On a week-end in Braemar which was supposed to be filled with cycling and walking but which turned out to be very wet, we found this excellent eating place. Go through the centre of the village heading to Linn o' Dee and you can't miss it. They only serve evening meals on Fridays and Saturdays but the food was obviously cooked by a chef who enjoys and is proud of what he produces. It was fresh, tasty and well presented. I chose the Scottish cheese dish (2 hard, 2 soft and 1 smelly) for my final course and the chef/owner was out with a detailed explanation of where they all came from in Scotland. It was superb. We went back the next day and used it as a coffee shop, very popular with good coffee and cakes. Great place, try the evening meals and he might be encouraged to open longer during the week. ”

Roy Mathers About Speyside
Roy Mathers About Speyside“I came across your site today, great site. I know Roy isn't a place but he made our trip to Scotland absolutely fantastic. I never expected to visit Scotland, the home of my McKenzie family, among many other family lines. A friend gave us Roy's name. I was thrilled to leave the driving to someone else as was everyone else in my party. Roy set up a schedule of places we wanted to see and places he thought we would enjoy seeing. Roy not only provided a great service for us, he even did some genealogy work for me before I arrived. His knowledge of Scotland's history added so much to the trip. Roy's wife is a chef and we enjoyed a lot of delicious treats on our outings. Scotland was so much better than I expected and I am still excited about the trip after almost 3 years. We loved the trip, the country and the people and want to make a return visit. This is just a little summary of all the great things about our trip.”

Arduaine B&B“Last week my wife and I ventured into a B&B for the first time and discovered a real gem. Warm welcome, homely atmosphere, excellent food, and the hostess's attention to detail and little 'extras' made us feel really pampered. Everything was to an amazingly high standard, as good if not better than many hotels we have stayed in. And there is so much to do in the area. For me it was the golf, so many testing courses to choose from, but there is something for everyone to enjoy. A great break - we highly recommend.”

“I've just returned from 3 nights at Culdearn House and can't sing its praises enough. Not only is the accommodation and food excellent, it shows what owners can do to make a hotel feel special. The attention to detail in the design and furnishing in the rooms, the wonderful meals using only local produce are outstanding memories. British Waterways Inverness
British Waterways Inverness“We were sailing up the Moray Firth to take a yacht to Seaport Marina on the Caledonian Canal in early July 2007. I had phoned the office and Lucy had answered all our questions about access to the canal, lock times, tides etc. The trip up the Firth took longer than we had anticipated and we started to have the tide against us. We phoned the office again and then the lock keeper phoned us back and said that although he should go home at 18.00 he would wait for us to arrive. If we had missed the lock that night we wouldn't have been able to get in the lock until 12.00 next day. The lock keeper was cheery and welcoming when we arrived despite having kept him waiting over half an hour. Next morning we went up to the marina and then Lucy organised a berth for us and a taxi to the station so we could catch the train we were booked on. All the BW staff were enornmously helpful and certainly went the extra mile.”

The Kitchen Restaurant, Inverness
The Kitchen Restaurant“We booked a table for eight people at peak time on Saturday night in a busy Inverness. We fetched up five minutes early at this restaurant, which is going flat-out. But with good humour and attentiveness they let us know rightaway the state of play, how long we’ll have to wait and further reassure us by saying we’ve got a great view overlooking the river. Twice in as many minutes the staff pause to chat and make sure everything is OK during our short wait. After a brief interval our table is ready and the rest of the evening proves faultless. As service-givers, the staff at The Kitchen certainly went the extra mile. The dining experience here has one other bonus: the restaurant is in a building with really interesting architecture, a real 21st-century design for conservative Inverness. We’ll be back! ”

“Wonderful views and style, very welcoming to an unbooked single diner. And a Nova-Scotian waitress was delighted to discover I'd visited her homeland and chat about it.”

The Old Rectory Guest House, Annan
The Old Rectory Guest House“My family and I recently stayed at The Old Rectory when we had a family wedding nearby. Unfortunately one member of the family who stayed has a long term illness but was determined she still wanted to come. Mr & Mrs Buckel were fantastic hosts and made sure that despite her illness that she should enjoy the visit as much as possible and even made her breakfast in bed. We found the rooms to be spotlessly clean and very comfortable, we had a television and facilities to make hot drinks. The Old Rectory has a lovely warm and relaxing atmosphere to it with comfortable and stylish rooms with everything we needed to make our stay very enjoyable. It wouldn't have been the same had we not have had such friendly and attentive hosts. Thank you for such a great stay and we have already booked to go back very soon! ”

“One of the places we've been meaning to check out for ages. Original positive comment absolutely confirmed. Competent food, friendly service, nice ambience (apart from the iffy background music - but that's subjective) Also really good value and opens all year. This is a place it's well worth getting of the A9 for at any time of day. It's going to become a regular lunch stop for us from now on.”

Glenfinnan House Hotel, Glenfinnan
Glenfinnan House Hotel“This is just one of these rare places where, after you've discovered it, you'd never think of going anywhere else if you were in the vicinity. We dropped in at lunchtime on the 'Road to the Isles' and found a mix of happy locals (always a good sign) and very pleasantly surprised tourists. They were all happy because of the sheer quality of the bar food - clever, very competent and interesting - when it would have been so easy to stick to the old menus standbys. Instead, managers Manja and Duncan Gibson (chef) have been creative and gone the extra mile to delight their customers. (And the views are great as well!) Looking forward to the next time I'm on the Road to the Isles...”

Secret Scotland“Hi, I was struggling to work out a self-drive itinerary for our trip to Scotland. I found a few sites who do whole packages (tours with accommodation booked by them) but they seemed to be expensive. I stumbled across the above website and contacted them with my ideas. Mike went out of his way to make sure that I got the itinerary that suited us, including detailed driving instructions, things to see and do as well as a list of recommended accommodation in our stopover towns. The cost was minimal and it only took a couple of days. If only he could control the weather for our trip as well! Would recommend this website to anyone who is travelling to Scotland and does not just want to follow the tourist routes. V. Crompton (Australia)”

High Drummore Holiday Cottage, Drummore.
“What a wonderful place High Drummore Cottage is. We arrived on Saturday and had a lovely chat with Elizabeth who manages the cottage. Elizabeth was very friendly and helpful, There's no need to visit the local tourist information as she plenty of information at hand. What a great location - peaceful - great views!! walking distance from the friendly pubs at Drummore, The Mull of Galloway - what else can I say!! This is a place I recommend to my family and friends”

The Old Exchange
The Old Exchange “What a wonderful place The Old Exchange is! We arrived on Saturday and as soon as we had unpacked we heard the sound of the bagpipes outside. We were astounded with this amazing sound. We had hoped we would hear bagpipes at some point on our holiday but were so pleased to hear them outside our holiday cottage. Mr Ballantine (junior) who manages the bookings often plays to the new guests after arrival. That was the start of a fantastic week touring Dumfries and Galloway. I have noticed that many of the comments on 'the extra mile' are about properties in this amazing part of Scotland. I think the owners really go out of their way to welcome guests”

Ferintosh Guest House
Ferintosh Guest House “We visited Ferintosh Guesthouse on several occasions now. Ferintosh is such a lovely guesthouse, the rooms are beautiful, tasteful furnished with all the luxuries you hope to find in a 5 star hotel. Great breakfast and most important...the owners, Emma and Robertson are very friendly and helpful. There's no need to visit the local tourist information, Emma and Robertson are well informed and a bit more. Good location, near the train station and it's a 5 minutes stroll to the centre of Dumfries. When you love malt whisky...Ferintosh is almost a must, I can't imagine someone can find a nicer collection of rare malt whiskies. Robertson always wears a kilt...bonus point. This is a place I recommend to my family and friends. Eye for detail and Service with a capital S.Will return for sure! Robin, The Hague, The Netherlands”

Ferintosh Guest House, Dumfries
Ferintosh Guest House “This is a small, quirky and totally agreeable guest house. From the moment you arrive you are invited to partake (sometimes in the garden)from Robertson's extensive collection of malts. I did not draw one (entirely) sober breath during my five nights there, but I was on holday. A former professor of art from the US, Robertson has gone completely "native" and married a local lass (Emma). He hasn't quite burned all his trousers, but it is a rare event to meet him in anything but a kilt. If you turn up in a kilt, he will offer you an extra dram of whisky (in additon to the one already in your room). The rooms are comfortable, spotlessly clean, quiet, and the breakfasts are fantastic. Space for your bike(s) are available in the garden shed, and I made good use of this as I "did" four out of the "Seven Stanes" mountain bike trails locally. The location next to the station is easy to find, and it is extremely close to the town centre. If you want a local pub crawl, Robertson will organise it for you and with kindred spirits, he will be your guide to Dumfries pubs. Strongly recommended - in fact I can't wait to get back there. ”
by Niall McGuinness on 04/07/2007
“A note from the editors. Well, it looks as though the host at the Ferintosh put the fiery cross round his own clan of satisfied customers who were quick to rally round and email us with plenty more comments to confirm the good things that go on here, especially those involving Scotland’s national drink. In addition to the two comments published, we were told by Cathy Crane that ‘Emma & Robertson made my trip to Scotland the most memorable time that I have ever had! The rooms are beautiful, staff are friendly and knowledgeable about their country and a bit of scotch in the room at night upon the return of a weary traveler was perfect! Then, before we could draw breath, Donald Kay, a tour organiser from Ayr, chipped in with a comment about how he intends to make the place a regular overnight for his tours. 'Both Robertson and Emma make you feel at home, and the breakfast is fantastic'. While mulling over this another comment came in from Anthony (Tony) Speight: ‘The owners treated us like family friends rather than just customers. If we get the chance to visit Scotland again we will definitely spend another few days at Ferintosh.’ After that, Hamish Bicknell from West Sussex insisted that ‘The Ferintosh has to be among the highest-rated establishment of its kind in Scotland, if not the entire United Kingdom……. Robertson and Emma have a sincere and genuine interest in people, a quality that ensures their guests are immediately made to feel members of the Ferintosh family…… my third visit to The Ferintosh in Dumfries and I am already booked in for a fourth stay….rest assured that I will be back many times for that special Ferintosh experience'. Personally, we like the idea of an extra dram if you arrive wearing a kilt. Thanks, everyone, for your contributions. We’ll keep them on file here (as we think there will be more to come!). What a great example of how going the extra mile pays off – you get a whole lot of loyal customers obviously pleased to sing your praises. ”

Village Green, Cawdor
“My wife and I heard that Village Green were opening a coffee shop in the pretty estate village of Cawdor, so ventured out to give it a try. Sadly the paperwork from Highland Council had not yet arrived to allow them to operate. However, the young lady offered us a free coffee and a tea (no strainer in sight yet!) as it gave her the opportunity to perfect her skills. All beautifully presented with a piece of complimentary shortbread! Excellent, we can highly recommend Village Green, but sadly it won't be on the house...it's now open for business”

The Rumblie, Laggan.
The Rumblie“This small (6 guest) B&B was recommended to my by a friend who'd stayed there, so I took her word for the good service and booked for 1 night for me and 2 old friends who were visiting me in Scotland for a few days. This is honestly the BEST B&B I have had the pleasure of staying in - I had the double bedroom at no supplement! A warm welcome from owners Fiona & Simon and their stunning home-cooked dinner (3 course) was the perfect way to finish of our travels of the day. This B&B is close to Ardverikie - aka Glenbogle - so for fans of the TV series "Monarch of the Glen" it's the perfect place to stay as they have memorabilia deluxe from the show for you to freely browse. I've re-booked already!!!”

GNER
GNER “Another Edinburgh to Elgin epic rail journey! There I was sitting on a GNER service near Arbroath on the east coast when they announce a problem up ahead – a track issue, not GNER’s fault. My connecting First ScotRail train north leaves Aberdeen six minutes after GNER’s arrives. Well, GNER do their best to make up time but their arrival is bang on the departure time of the First ScotRail service. Did they hold it for a couple of minutes? No. Instead, there is an unseemly scramble. Dramatically, the more athletic passengers actually reach the ScotRail train while it is stationary and, through its closed doors, plead for admittance without success. The First ScotRail service roars out. We all complain to a nearby ScotRail employee who looks at us blankly and rudely, doesn't even reply to our protests! But help is at hand. With great calmness and politeness, an ever-so-nice chap from GNER beckons us over, sorts us out, puts us on taxis within minutes, and sends us northwards to our destination. This qualifies as an Extra Mile because of the promptness of GNER action. No hiding, no running away – there was a problem and they effectively sorted it out. ”

Cream o' Galloway
“My family are real fans of 'Cream o' Galloway', a dairy farm that has diversified in a big way and is now known far beyond the Galloway area for its delicious organic icecream. It is a haven for those that love the great outdoors and delicious, high quality food. Our pre-school son loves the indoor and outdoor adventure play areas, they seem to have planned activities for all ages. I love their eco philosophy - a practising organic farm that also educates with farm tours and nature walks, a wind turbine that helps provide energy for the business and funding towards local community projects. Even in the winter season the cycle and walk trails are open. There is a fantastic tall tower to climb and see the stunning views for miles around. The staff are always there for a friendly chat, and on our second visit our son was delighted they remembered his name on arrival! This place has a real feel good factor and I love it as much as my four year old does!”

The Old Rectory Guest House, Annan
The Old Rectory Guest House“My husband, my 4 year old son and myself stayed here for a long weekend recently. We stayed in a very spacious, comfortable family room. The Rectory has fab, friendly owners, who even supplied a basket of toys to help entertain my son! It is a lovely house with a large dining room that is ideal when you have a 4 year old eating breakfast! The breakfast was delicious, plenty of choice and apparently all local produce & fair trade products. My husband says to mention the secure car park and the lock up for his fishing gear. It was an ideal location for his fishing, but also a great location for us 2 non-anglers to go site seeing n shopping ( recommend Caerlaverock Castle and Mabie Farm Park). One of the owners is a trained reflexologist and massage therapist , so have book myself a treatment for when we go back. Excellent rates & very, very highly recommended!”

Cafe Breizh, Perth
Breizh“It's Sunday evening on a drive south and we're hungry. Perth is the nearest big town so we make our way to the centre. It's already after 8pm and we haven't booked. We try two places amd walk from both. (Don't ask.) At the last minute we spot this cafe/restaurant. It's getting on for 9 o'clock but they are welcoming - totally charming, in fact, though it must be getting near last orders. The menu is authentic Breton - a reminder of warmer climes on a cool grey evening. It was all so appetising! Our faith fully restored, we continue our journey - but what a find for us, just as we were giving up hope! ”
by Gilbert Summers on 24/06/2007
“Since that night (see above) we have visited again, from time to time, and Breizh certainly keeps up its standards. Often very busy at lunchtimes - noisy and jolly with locals having a nice time - but the staff still manage to be friendly and attentive. Cooking just as authentic as well - a real touch of France in 'douce' Perth. We really like it.....”

Clachaig Inn- Glencoe
“I am a location manager in the film industry and recently was shooting a relatively large American movie in the Highlands of Scotland. At very short notice and due to a change in script I had to find a small Scottish hotel. My scouting led me to the Clachaig Inn in Glencoe. As well as filming a small scene outside the hotel, we also took 14 rooms for crew. The hotel is located in one of the most stunning areas of Scotland. The staff were so amicable and helpful, it was almost unbelievable! As well as us filming outside they did wonderful food from the bar for the crew that were part of the shoot there. I really do feel that they did go that extra mile to make us feel welcome and look after us, and believe me that can be quite unusual experience for a film crew!”

Nunland Country Holidays. Lochfoot. Dumfries.
Nunland Country Holidays. Lochfoot. Dumfries.“During the past 7 years we have visited Nunland on many occasions. We have grown use to the immaculately presented and always improving accommodation, to the beautiful scenery and peaceful tranquillity of this lovely spot. We look forward to the warm welcome we always get from Liz and Mark and we enjoy finding Molly the resident Labrador waiting on our doorstep in the morning for our dog to come out to play. We have had many wonderfully relaxing breaks there. But it is when the unexpected happens that Liz and Mark always come up trumps. When we woke one February morning to find a winter wonderland – Mark was already at work digging out the snow from the long drive so that we could get home – we so wished he hadn’t bothered – any excuse to stay! On another occasion with my husband’s leg in plaster our son drove us to Nunland. We had no car for the holiday but every morning Mark drove to the village shop and left the morning paper, the Sunday bacon and eggs and locally baked biscuits on our doorstop. One October holiday we took our much loved but ailing dog Sam for one last holiday at the place he enjoyed so much. Sadly he died in the night. Liz and Mark were so wonderful. They contacted their own vet and did everything. All we had to do was say goodbye to a much loved friend. Thankfully we now have Jake to enjoy the Nunland walks but we like to think Sam’s happy spirit is now part of what makes Nunland a special place that we always look forward to visiting with special people who always go the extra mile. ”

Foveran Hotel, St Ola, Kirkwall
“What a find! Most helpful staff who gave excellent directions and suggestions for such a short visit. The dining room was full on a Monday evening. We were told dinner bookings have to be 6 weeks in advance in high season! Hard to believe but wait till you sample the menu! With wonderful views of Scapa Flow and such comfortable surroundings this small hotel is well worth a visit. ”

Redlands Lodge, Ladybank, Fife
“Along with another couple we spent 2 very comfortable night here. A warm welcome from Kate with tea and biscuits in the ample outside seating area. The cabins are well appointed and have access to the cosy sitting room with TV, books and games. In the visitor's book, most visitors had remarked on the splendid breakfasts and we were not disappointed. But how does Alan cook these mushrooms? The hot tub will have to wait for another visit!”

The Ravenstone Deli, Whithorn
“The Ravenstone Deli in Whithorn’s historic High St is quite a find. In a remote part of Scotland where customer service is barely adequate (in my opinion)and on a sunny afternoon when virtually all the shops are closed this deli offered us a choice of eating and service that would stand up to comparison with the best available in the capital. The quality of the food is quite superb. Even the humble freshly made pizza was on a par, if not better, than those we recently tasted on recent trip to Florence. The staff are also exceedingly warm and friendly. The gap in this area for excellent daytime lunch or decent cappuccinos with superb service has been obvious for some years; in Whithorn this has now been fulfilled by the Ravenstone. Let's hope that business in surrounding towns will follow suit. ”

The Art House, Kelso
“I'd like to nominate Yvonne from the Art House, Kelso, for going way, way beyond the call of duty! Having ordered a wall clock, as a Silver Wedding present, obviously for a set date. their suppliers sent the wrong colour clock, then didn't dispatch the correct order. So Yvonne took their clock down from the wall, wrapped it beautifully for the silver wedding, and gave it to me! How about that for customer care! Her enthusiasm, outgoing personality and helpful attitude, make her one of the Borders bright shining stars!”

Craigellachie Hotel
Craigellachie Hotel“If you’re bored with choosing from the wine list, for the price of a decent bottle of wine, this hotel lets its knowledgeable sommelier do the work for you. For each of three courses he will not only select a suitable wine and pour you one glass of it, he’ll tell you all about why he thinks you should try it – in fact, he’ll give you a complete description of its provenance. And it’s all done in an enthusiastic and friendly way. Quite a revelation if you thought this place was only famous for its malt whisky. Well done, William Birch. Definitely a different way of adding a new dimension to dinner. ”

Glamis Castle“We visited Glamis Castle today and it was fantastic. The staff were so friendly and helpful and so good with my wee girl. They went to great lengths to make her feel welcome and to give the tour in words that she would understand. They pointed out areas that she would be particularly interested in and were not paranoid about her touching anything. She was given a quiz sheet to do as she went around and was awarded a prize for getting it all right. Around the grounds too it was so free and you really were made to feel welcome to roam around this lovely place and of course the connection with our own Queen Mother makes it all the more special. It is a real treasure not to be missed.”

The location and scenery are truly spectacular, but the house is amazing and the owners have thought of everything you could possibly need in any type of weather - from picnic equipment, to dvds, books and binoculars - there's even dressing up outfits for the kids and dog biscuits for hungry pups ! This is self catering with a big difference -you really feel like you could move in! The furniture and interiors are superb and all so tasteful, you just don't want to leave!”

Mountain Innovations, Fraoch Lodge, Boat of Garten
“On the train home, after a week in Torridon, the 6th (!) walking holiday I have enjoyed with this company, I sat wondering why their holidays are so good. A main factor, of course, is that they offer a complete package - transport to and from airport or railway station, transport on the walking days, accommodation, all meals and packed lunches (with the ability to provide very creatively for special diets), interesting walks showing the best features of the country (and not just guided walks, but lots of information on the geology, landscape, weather, flora and fauna etc). This is very commendable but not sufficient to explain the excellence of these holidays. I think that the key factors are that the owners Andy and Rebecca both work very hard and are both very good at what they do! ”

The Old Exchange
“I went to stay at the Old Exchange with my father for a birthday treat. He loves gardening and the South West of Scotland has many amazing gardens. We booked into The Old Exchange for a short break and were astounded with their service. Charlie, who runs the cottages provides wonderful accommodation, in a fantastic spot and makes you very welcome. We have stayed at many self-catering houses in the past, but to be greeted to an imaculate accommodation that was very tastefully decorated and have a welcome pack of rolls and cakes from the local bakers, fruit from the local greengrocers, cheeses made locally and locally produced selection of organic cold meats - we were gobsmacked. Definately not the tea bags and UHT milk we are used to. When it comes to 'the extra mile' we see here a true example. Thanks Charlie and we shall be back!”

Lazy Duck Hostel, Nethy Bridge
Lazy Duck Hostel“Staying here is very, very special. It is in part due to the location, hidden away in the woods with views of the Cairngorms, the calm and the quacking ducks. More importantly, it is due to the dedication and attention to detail that Val and David put into the place. Not only is it immaculate, it is full of well designed, thoughtful extras, and well crafted too - far beyond commercial choices. This is a labour of love - and you feel it. There is also that rarest of features - owners who really care and know when to talk and when to leave you alone. They care about your experience. ”

The Open Arms“We stayed at the Open Arms, Dirleton in March this year and we were very impressed with the hospitality we received from our hosts. Ben Lawers Hotel
Ben Lawers Hotel“I went into the Ben Lawers Hotel for a meal recently. Previously when walking in this area we had had trouble finding somewhere, because we were too early for most of the resturants and too late for the tearooms. Coming down from the hill at 5-6pm can be a tricky time to get fed. I was really impressed by the Ben Lawers Hotel, by Loch Tay. They didn't bat an eye at us turning up ravenous at 5.30pm wanting to eat a full meal. They were helpful, charming and the food was good value. They also let hill walkers use their car park and all they ask is that you go in and have a pint at the end of the day (that's not hard is it?). I'd recommend them to anyone walking in the Ben Lawers area”

The Old Forge, Knoydart
The Old Forge, Knoydart“We visited the Old Forge in Knoydart - the remotest pub in mainland Britain - earlier this year, and were truly swept away by the hospitality we received. From the minute we arrived I knew that we were in for a good time, when the log fire was burning and live folk music was already playing at 3pm and this continued well on into the night! Friendly, professional staff were on hand to take our drinks order – real coffee, real ales and really nice wines…available on tap! The dinner menu was flawless – venison, melt in the mouth lamb, and the best fresh langoustines I’ve ever tasted – and caught locally! Everything you would expect from a city bistro, but with all the claddings of a country pub. Just perfect! Knoydart, and especially the Old Forge was, for us, a “very special find” - they went the extra mile for us and we look forward to going back again very soon! ”

The Old Inn, Carbost
The Old Inn, Carbost“My friend Angus and I had been out climbing in the Cuillins and our walk had taken much longer than we expected. We called in at the Old Inn to try to get something to eat. It was just after 10pm and we were very hungry. Although they officially stopped serving meals at 9 pm, Priscilla kindly agreed to provide us with some delicious home made soup followed by haggis, neeps & tatties. Needless to say, we were absolutely delighted and will always remember this exceptional service ”

Violet Bank House, Lanark Rd. Edinburgh
Violet Bank House, Lanark Rd. Edinburgh“We knew that Violet Bank House was a 5* bed and breakfast so we already had high expectations. However we were blown away by the extraordinary range and quality of the facilities on offer. This was like a 5* hotel but better. Reta and John have definitely gone the extra mile with everything they have provided and with the magnificent breakfast (everything you could wish for AND stewed rhubarb freshly picked from their garden that morning) but their hospitality and friendliness (including carrying our cases upstairs and waving us off at the gate) went the extra mile too. ”

Morag's Lodge (Loch Ness)
Morag's Lodge (Loch Ness)“My family and I recently stayed at Morag's Lodge Hostel In Fort Augustus. We had car problems are were late in arrving. As we had expected to have dinner at the hostel (it's only £5.50) we had brought no food. The staff were really understanding and cooked us some food specially, even though the kitchen should have been shut. The staff were really helpful and friendly and gave us advice on lots of great (child friendly) things to do locally. Facilities were really good, small en-suite room with great power shower. We also spend the next evening in bar enjoying some local musicians while the kids slept (baby monitor range)This was not the type of hostel we are used to! Fantastic staff and a great atmostphere, we will be back.”

The Caley Sample Room
The Caley Sample Room“It’s the city, it’s Friday, it’s busy and by chance our b & b is near this place. We hesitantly wander in. Have we booked? No, but that doesn’t matter; two bar stools are quickly produced by the manager and we’re installed at the end of the bar. He comes back to give us menus, then explain the menus, make recommendations. Undivided and prompt attention. All this is going on in a busy, atmospheric pub/restaurant at one of their peak times. The food arrives and it’s really well cooked and presented - unpretentious and very competent. When we arrived we were uncertain if we would even be able to get a meal, but instead we were made welcome and given the impression our custom was appreciated even though it was peak time in a city pub. This was a really good example of ‘service exceeding expectation’. Our thanks to Chris Wood. We definitely left with a warm glow! ”

Shetland and The Shetland Times Bookshop
“I think The Shetland Times Bookshop on Commercial Street, Lerwick deserves a mention for superb service. On the morning of our departure from Shetland last May my wife purchased a copy of "The Shetland Bus" from the Bookshop. We had returned home to Lancashire before she began reading it and soon found some pages were blank. Upon contacting The Shetland Times Bookshop we were told to return the book and four days later a replacment copy arrived - together with stamps to cover expenses. Thank you The Shetland Times Bookshop for completing a memorable holiday - we can't wait to return in June. ”

The Lands of Loyal Hotel, Alyth
“As a tour operator we have been very impressed with the quiet professionalism of the excellent Land of Loyal Hotel in Alyth, Perthshire. Speyside Leisure, Fochabers
“I was browsing in this running and outdoor clothing shop on the main street in Fochabers, looking for sunglasses. Sure, you can pay a lot of money for sunglasses and the owner saw me admiring his selection with some quite fancy price tags. When I told him I just wanted a pair to use while running, he didn’t hesitate to direct me towards a much cheaper range, just in and not on display, which he said would be ideal for my purpose. He could easily have let me spend the extra cash but instead went the extra mile and saved me money. And he helpfully told me about local running clubs as well. ”

Bramley House B&B, Strathkinness
“Glad to have found a site like this to leave feedback about good service! We stayed at Bramley House, Strathkinness, just outside St Andrews, Fife, for two holidays, while it was under the ownership of Heather McLean. It was absolutely the very best B&B we have ever stayed in with lovely rooms, with sweets and whisky provided, gorgeous furnishings and bathrooms and, most importantly, fantastic breakfasts and a hostess who could not do enough for you. Heather appears to have left now, the B&B is under new management/ownership - I hope they maintain the standards set by Heather. I would also like to praise the children's play area in Strathkinness - when we were last there it was great, brand new, no vandalism, no damage and safe. We are visiting Strathkinness again this year (2007) and hope to find it in the same condition, it was a real credit to the village.”

“Bramley House is where we stayed for 5 nights in March 2008 and it was an absolute dream,I worked in the hotel trade for 25 years as an inspector.Im now retired, but if I was still in the trade and visited Bramley House, I would give them top grading. The house is very clean, and the service is excellent ”

“We stayed at Bramley House in the village of Strathkinness. The owners David & Phiw Holloway made our hoiday. The service they provided was second to none. The whole house was spotless, the breakfasts were outstanding, and Phiw's omelettes are first class. We have stayed in other 4 **** rated Guest Houses before, but Bramley House is at another level. The tourist board should certainly seriously consider awarding this wonderful house 5***** Since staying there we have had freinds who have been there and have the same thoughts on the place. David is a golf professional and took my husband George for a round of golf which included 4 hours of coaching. It improved his game enormously and its something he often talks about. We cant wait to go back there again this year.”

Orkney - Five Senses Tours
Orkney - Five Senses Tours“I completely agree with first Five Senses comment (see below). From the 14 year old girl, the 7 year old boy, and 4 adults - we all got what we wanted from our expereince with Five Senses. For instance, on the road, Malcolm learned that we were all fond of sheep and one member of knitting. He and Rachel found us a rare breed sheep farm/petting zoo AND a hand-dyed/spun knitting shop (attached to a bookstore for those not into knitting), as a surprise. There was no problem saying "cool, lets stop here". Five Senses was the way for us to see Scotland. Next time, 2 weeks instead of one. ”

Joan and Fred's - Argyll House in Stirling
Joan and Fred's - Argyll House in Stirling“This year in September we are returning to Scotland for our wedding anniversary. My wife and I married (second time for both of us) in Stirling five years ago, and we are coming back from our native Canada for our anniversary. When we married we booked a B&B from an internet listing. We couldn't have picked a finer couple to share our visit and marriage with. Joan and Fred definitely went the extra mile, and we will always hold then dear to our hearts. Of course, during our many visits to Scotland, we have met nothing but fine people and visited many beautiful and historic places. We will continue to come back as many times as we are able! Your website is a great idea. We'll be sure to let everyone know about it in our travels, and I am sure we'll have lots of new entries after our next trip. Scotland forever! ”

The kind, thoughtful and caring folk of St Andrews.
“My wife and I (expatriates) were on a nostalgic visit to St Andrews in April 2006. I stumbled just before the kerb and fell, severely bruising my left side. It was amazing the number of people who immediately dashed to my rescue. Kind, thoughtful and caring St Andrewsonians. I was helped up and after protestations of my being ok most of them left but a few stayed to make sure I was ok. Funnily enough the person who actually helped me up was an Australian medic. We continued on our tour and returned to Canada 3 weeks later. Scotland is still our favourite holiday place. Thank you.”

Upper Leogh B&B, Fair Isle, Shetland
“Fair Isle is a wonderful place to get away from it all, and there is nowhere more welcoming than Kathy Coull's bed and breakfast croft at Upper Leogh in the middle of the southern part of the island. Kathy is a recognised expert at traditional spinning and weaving who hosts regular workshops for visitors intent on learning more about the textiles that Fair Isle is famous for. Her croft B&B is also a great favourite of the birdwatching community. As there are no restaurants on Fair Isle, Kathy usually offers a full board service, which is very reasonably priced; she is also a wonderful cook. I spent four days there and would recommend her croft to anyone. Contact her at: 00 44 (0)1595 760 248”

Lerwick Tourist Information Centre, Shetland
“It is fashionable to moan and complain about the quality of service given by local Tourist Boards, and in my work as a travel writer, I have complained about many of them. But at the opposite end of the scale is the Tourist Information Centre in Lerwick. You will never find a friendlier, more accommodating group of tourist board professionals anywhere in Scotland. So make the information centre in Market Square in the middle of town your first stop. I did, and I was very very pleasantly surprised. ”

They weren't up to my usual standard"!I have been there previously & was given a free coffee when they thought I had waited too long for my food due to short staffing that day. Both these events were completely unprompted & done on the initiative of the attentive & extremely rushed waitresses. ”

Kinburn Guest House, St Andrews
“This beautiful property in St Andrews oozes Scottish charm and elegance but it has a delightfully unpretentious and friendly atmosphere. The hosts are welcoming and helpful but very unobtrusive and the presentation of the rooms and exceptional attention to detail makes this one of the best B&B experiences I've ever had. If you've got a few nights to spend in St Andrews, Kinburn Guest House is a real treat. ”

The Courtyard Restaurant, Brasserie and Bar, Kenmore
“We stopped for afternoon tea (16/3/07)and enjoyed it so much we returned the next day for lunch. This is the ideal pit stop following a brisk walk up Drummond Hill. Bridge of Lochay Hotel & Restaurant, Killin
“We visited on 17th March 07 for a bar supper. Whilst the menu was more substantial than a 'supper' the food was excellent quality, perfectly cooked and great value. The surroundings were really warm and cosy (open fires) and the staff were very welcoming and attentive. The wine list was also very agreeable with the wine of the month an excellent choice - only £9.99 a bottle! We highly recommend a relaxing eveing out whilst staying in/around Killin or Loch Tay. ”

Well worth a visit.”

Foxbank Guest House, Hunter's Quay, Argyll
“We have stayed there a number of times and each time the owners – Lawther & Ronnie Murchison – really pull out all the stops to make us feel welcome. There is such a happy and relaxed atmosphere with amazing views of the River Clyde. The guest house has been recently been refurbished and the attention to detail has been first class – from the new and en suite facilities to the home baking, freshly baked bread to percolated coffee. We really could not have asked for more. And on top of the that the rates are so reasonable! I think the owners must do this job for love ”

Kildonan Stores and Post Office, Kildonan, Isle of Arran“We visit Arran every year on holiday and love it (so much so we're getting married there this year!) and always enjoy visiting the Kildonan Stores to stock up on provisions and sweeties. It's situated in the best village on the island, Kildonan - the shop is situated right on the beach with views to die for across to Pladda Island and Paddy's Milestone beyond. The shop is two minutes from a fantastic seal colony, many can be seen from the shop front having a wee swim. Inside it's an aladdin's cave of foodstuffs and booze.....I was amazed to find the best quality saffron for sale there last year (I can't buy it in my own town in England). The service is always excellent and friendly - it really is well worth a visit.”

Castle Stuart, near Inverness
Castle Stuart“Staying in a castle, you expect to pay for it and you expect a certain level of service. However, the service there is the best I have ever had the pleasure to experience - all the little extra things, that don't cost a lot, but make it extra-special. On our anniversary, we were greeted with a table strewn with heart-shaped beads and red wine in a heart-shaped bottle. Any time you fancied a nibble throughout your stay, it was on-hand, be it crisps, chocs or fruit. A choice of music was provided for evenings in the drawing room - together with bite-size cakes and other nibbles! The personal attention received was first class too. A perfect stay.”

The Dundonnell Hotel “We were a party of 5 spending 2 nights at The Dundonnell Hotel in Mid February. We were the only guests and Trish and Gareth couldn't do enough for us. A warm welcome, excellent service and good value for money. Highly recommended.”

Glen Clova Hotel“Having booked a dinner and accommodation for a dozen or so people both we and the hotel were surprised when an extra four people turned up at the last minute. Despite the hotel being full but for one room (and there's no other accommodation in the glen in late autumn) they managed not just to do extra dinners but also to find accommodation for the extra four - great service (and the food was good too)”

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, Edinburgh“My partner and I received membership to The Scotch Malt Whisky Society for Christmas 2006. The staff at the Queen Street venue are absolutely fantastic and go out of their way to make your visit comfortable and memorable. They are all able to speak intelligently about Scotch which makes it even better. If you're not a member find someone who is and become their friend!”

“I couldn't agree more about the qualities of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Both the venues in Edinburgh are fabulous places for all occasions from a quiet coffee and read of the papers to lively whisky tastings and dinner for a large group. The service is excellent with friendly and knowledgable staff who won't intimidate you and are keen to advise on the whisky (and wine too for non whisky drinkers). My tip for non members is to book dinner for the early evening menu on a Thursday night (non members can book a Thurs) at 28 Queen St.”

Harris Hotel, Isle of Harris
Harris Hotel, Isle of Harris“I had an excellent experience with the wonderful Harris hotel in Tarbert, Harris, last year when I was guiding a walking holiday based at the hotel. One of my clients (Dutch) became very ill (she was diabetic and had ‘flu) one evening. The hotel helped me call a local GP (early hours of the morning) and after a late night consultation proceeded to nurse the hotel-bound walker over the next few days whilst I continued to monitor her health and keep the other clients happy and walking! Endless free cups of tlc, tea and shortbread helped her speedy recovery and stopped an already serious situation from becoming a trip to hospital and a flight home (or worse). Superb customer service and worthy of my host of the year. ”

“Picture the scene about 1715 on a wet Monday in August. My client a fanatical stone circler is dying for a hot drink. In we go to the empty café. I am full of trepidation bearing in mind the hour..." What can I get you gents?" says the bright girl behind the counter. "A double decaff latte with cinnamon?" offers up the visiting Professor. As he admitted to me afterwards more in hope than in expectation! "Coming right up" chirrips the girl. What a wonderful feeling when it all comes together like that!
