“We have visited these lodges several times over the past 4/5 years and love it here! The owners Mark and Liz are lovely and even went out of their way to be witnesses at our wedding 4 years ago as we went to Scotland without telling our family/friends and got married so had no witnesses to take with us!!
It so peaceful and relaxing here while also being fairly close to Dumfries. We have just returned home after our latest visit here and our children loved it here too and didnt want to leave! Definitely recommended. ”add response

Cutlars Lodge, Orroland Holiday Cottages, Dumfries & Galloway
“Cutlars lodge is my favourite place to get away from it all in Dumfries and Galloway. On a private estate, its a self catering detached cottage in its own grounds - no neighbours (except cows, sheep and pheasant). On a clear night the sky is black and the stars are bright - no light pollution here - quite amazing. The owners are very friendly and helpful and live elsewhere on the estate - on hand if needed. I've stayed at Cutlars for a week each year, for many years - most recently in May 2008. It’s the place itself that covers that "extra mile" that you are looking for. Torbay Lodge Guest House, Dumfries
“Just wanted to say that we recently stayed at The Torbay Lodge in Dumfries and was very impressed with our stay. We made a last minute decision to re-visit Dumfries and found Torbay on the internet. The hosts couldn't have been more helpful and went out of their way to provide as much information as possible about the surrounding area. The Casa Mia restaraunt and the Cavens arms (recommended) are excellent places to eat.

Motorparty classic car hire
“Avril and Martin run one of the most interesting businesses I have come across. I have always wanted to drive an e-type Jaguar, and I came across a website where you can hire a selection of classic and vintage cars, just for a day or for longer if you want. So I booked the white e-type for 2 days where my wife and I took a trip to Edinburgh. What an experience, the car was just fantastic and the scenery amazing, but the best bit was the service. Avril was so accommodationg when I had to change the dates, and Martin delivered the car to my hotel and very patiently helped me to understand the car. The whole experience was just perfect, the car was not in 'showroom' condition so I felt very comfortable driving it as it was a real car to drive.

Arduaine B&B, Wigtown
“Last week my wife and I ventured into a B&B for the first time and discovered a real gem. Warm welcome, homely atmosphere, excellent food, and the hostess's attention to detail and little 'extras' made us feel really pampered. Everything was to an amazingly high standard, as good if not better than many hotels we have stayed in. And there is so much to do in the area. The Old Rectory Guest House, Annan
“My family and I recently stayed at The Old Rectory when we had a family wedding nearby. Unfortunately one member of the family who stayed has a long term illness but was determined she still wanted to come.
Mr & Mrs Buckel were fantastic hosts and made sure that despite her illness that she should enjoy the visit as much as possible and even made her breakfast in bed.
We found the rooms to be spotlessly clean and very comfortable, we had a television and facilities to make hot drinks. The Old Rectory has a lovely warm and relaxing atmosphere to it with comfortable and stylish rooms with everything we needed to make our stay very enjoyable. It wouldn't have been the same had we not have had such friendly and attentive hosts. Thank you for such a great stay and we have already booked to go back very soon!

High Drummore Holiday Cottage, Drummore.
“What a wonderful place High Drummore Cottage is. We arrived on Saturday and had a lovely chat with Elizabeth who manages the cottage. Elizabeth was very friendly and helpful, There's no need to visit the local tourist information as she plenty of information at hand. What a great location - peaceful - great views!! walking distance from the friendly pubs at Drummore, The Mull of Galloway - what else can I say!!

The Old Exchange
“What a wonderful place The Old Exchange is! We arrived on Saturday and as soon as we had unpacked we heard the sound of the bagpipes outside. We were astounded with this amazing sound. We had hoped we would hear bagpipes at some point on our holiday but were so pleased to hear them outside our holiday cottage. Mr Ballantine (junior) who manages the bookings often plays to the new guests after arrival. That was the start of a fantastic week touring Dumfries and Galloway. I have noticed that many of the comments on 'the extra mile' are about properties in this amazing part of Scotland. Ferintosh Guest House, Dumfries
“This is a small, quirky and totally agreeable guest house. From the moment you arrive you are invited to partake (sometimes in the garden)from Robertson's extensive collection of malts. I did not draw one (entirely) sober breath during my five nights there, but I was on holday.
A former professor of art from the US, Robertson has gone completely "native" and married a local lass (Emma). He hasn't quite burned all his trousers, but it is a rare event to meet him in anything but a kilt. If you turn up in a kilt, he will offer you an extra dram of whisky (in additon to the one already in your room). The rooms are comfortable, spotlessly clean, quiet, and the breakfasts are fantastic. Space for your bike(s) are available in the garden shed, and I made good use of this as I "did" four out of the "Seven Stanes" mountain bike trails locally. The location next to the station is easy to find, and it is extremely close to the town centre. If you want a local pub crawl, Robertson will organise it for you and with kindred spirits, he will be your guide to Dumfries pubs. “A note from the editors. Well, it looks as though the host at the Ferintosh put the fiery cross round his own clan of satisfied customers who were quick to rally round and email us with plenty more comments to confirm the good things that go on here, especially those involving Scotland’s national drink. In addition to the two comments published, we were told by Cathy Crane that ‘Emma & Robertson made my trip to Scotland the most memorable time that I have ever had! The rooms are beautiful, staff are friendly and knowledgeable about their country and a bit of scotch in the room at night upon the return of a weary traveler was perfect! Then, before we could draw breath, Donald Kay, a tour organiser from Ayr, chipped in with a comment about how he intends to make the place a regular overnight for his tours. 'Both Robertson and Emma make you feel at home, and the breakfast is fantastic'. While mulling over this another comment came in from Anthony (Tony) Speight: ‘The owners treated us like family friends rather than just customers. If we get the chance to visit Scotland again we will definitely spend another few days at Ferintosh.’
After that, Hamish Bicknell from West Sussex insisted that ‘The Ferintosh has to be among the highest-rated establishment of its kind in Scotland, if not the entire United Kingdom……. Robertson and Emma have a sincere and genuine interest in people, a quality that ensures their guests are immediately made to feel members of the Ferintosh family…… my third visit to The Ferintosh in Dumfries and I am already booked in for a fourth stay….rest assured that I will be back many times for that special Ferintosh experience'.
Personally, we like the idea of an extra dram if you arrive wearing a kilt. Thanks, everyone, for your contributions. We’ll keep them on file here (as we think there will be more to come!). What a great example of how going the extra mile pays off – you get a whole lot of loyal customers obviously pleased to sing your praises.

Ferintosh Guest House
“We visited Ferintosh Guesthouse on several occasions now. Ferintosh is such a lovely guesthouse, the rooms are beautiful, tasteful furnished with all the luxuries you hope to find in a 5 star hotel. Great breakfast and most important...the owners, Emma and Robertson are very friendly and helpful. There's no need to visit the local tourist information, Emma and Robertson are well informed and a bit more. Good location, near the train station and it's a 5 minutes stroll to the centre of Dumfries. When you love malt whisky...Ferintosh is almost a must, I can't imagine someone can find a nicer collection of rare malt whiskies. Robertson always wears a kilt...bonus point. This is a place I recommend to my family and friends. Eye for detail and Service with a capital S.Will return for sure!

Cream o' Galloway
“My family are real fans of 'Cream o' Galloway', a dairy farm that has diversified in a big way and is now known far beyond the Galloway area for its delicious organic icecream. It is a haven for those that love the great outdoors and delicious, high quality food. Our pre-school son loves the indoor and outdoor adventure play areas, they seem to have planned activities for all ages. I love their eco philosophy - a practising organic farm that also educates with farm tours and nature walks, a wind turbine that helps provide energy for the business and funding towards local community projects. Even in the winter season the cycle and walk trails are open. There is a fantastic tall tower to climb and see the stunning views for miles around. The staff are always there for a friendly chat, and on our second visit our son was delighted they remembered his name on arrival! “My husband, my 4 year old son and myself stayed here for a long weekend recently. We stayed in a very spacious, comfortable family room. The Rectory has fab, friendly owners, who even supplied a basket of toys to help entertain my son! It is a lovely house with a large dining room that is ideal when you have a 4 year old eating breakfast! The breakfast was delicious, plenty of choice and apparently all local produce & fair trade products. My husband says to mention the secure car park and the lock up for his fishing gear. It was an ideal location for his fishing, but also a great location for us 2 non-anglers to go site seeing n shopping ( recommend Caerlaverock Castle and Mabie Farm Park). One of the owners is a trained reflexologist and massage therapist , so have book myself a treatment for when we go back. “During the past 7 years we have visited Nunland on many occasions. We have grown use to the immaculately presented and always improving accommodation, to the beautiful scenery and peaceful tranquillity of this lovely spot. We look forward to the warm welcome we always get from Liz and Mark and we enjoy finding Molly the resident Labrador waiting on our doorstep in the morning for our dog to come out to play. We have had many wonderfully relaxing breaks there.
But it is when the unexpected happens that Liz and Mark always come up trumps.
When we woke one February morning to find a winter wonderland – Mark was already at work digging out the snow from the long drive so that we could get home – we so wished he hadn’t bothered – any excuse to stay! On another occasion with my husband’s leg in plaster our son drove us to Nunland. We had no car for the holiday but every morning Mark drove to the village shop and left the morning paper, the Sunday bacon and eggs and locally baked biscuits on our doorstop. One October holiday we took our much loved but ailing dog Sam for one last holiday at the place he enjoyed so much. Sadly he died in the night. Liz and Mark were so wonderful. They contacted their own vet and did everything. All we had to do was say goodbye to a much loved friend. Thankfully we now have Jake to enjoy the Nunland walks but we like to think Sam’s happy spirit is now part of what makes Nunland a special place that we always look forward to visiting with special people who always go the extra mile.

The Ravenstone Deli, Whithorn
“The Ravenstone Deli in Whithorn’s historic High St is quite a find. In a remote part of Scotland where customer service is barely adequate (in my opinion)and on a sunny afternoon when virtually all the shops are closed this deli offered us a choice of eating and service that would stand up to comparison with the best available in the capital.
The quality of the food is quite superb. Even the humble freshly made pizza was on a par, if not better, than those we recently tasted on recent trip to Florence. The staff are also exceedingly warm and friendly.
The gap in this area for excellent daytime lunch or decent cappuccinos with superb service has been obvious for some years; in Whithorn this has now been fulfilled by the Ravenstone. Let's hope that business in surrounding towns will follow suit.

The Buccleuch Arms Hotel, Moffat.
“We visited the Buccleuch Arms Hotel in Moffat on a snowy day last month. We received an outstanding welcome from all the staff who anticipated our every need. The staff here are obviously receiving some amazing training from the owner Dave Smith and his team. The food is world class - we had the best steak pie (locally sourced) and creme brulee ever!
